adventure commissions

Go to a town and commission a bronze item.  it will more likely be masterwork than usual.

Alternatively find some steel items you don't want -- commision them to smelt the items and make a fitting breastplate (or sword or whatnot)

This makes gold more worth it and doesn't make the hero have to smelt his own stuff.

This idea does sound cool! A sufficiently powerful adventurer commissions a personal set of Dwarven steel armor engraved with his exploits against the local megabeasts!  :D

Live long if you can, and prosper by any means necessary.  Any means, Urist.  So pull that lever, or by Armok, I'll lock you outside come next siege.
He who plays with dwarves must take care that he does not become a dwarf.  And when you stare into DwarfFort, Dwarffort stares back into you.
