As people said anything is possible in dwarf fortress I was wondering if I'm able to fight in battles between factions. And assuming this is indeed possible where do I go to enlist me in the army and know where battles are going to take place?

Participation in wars is pretty iffy right now. It can happen, but being sent to war is incredibly rare and it's pretty broken, so you can never complete your assignment.

It's really easy to get into Coc; trust me, all you need is one taste of Coc and you'll be begging for more! I wasn't even sure I would like Coc until after I got a taste, and now I'm all about Coc!

Y'know, there should really be a better abbreviation for Call of Cthulhu.

The battle event will be calculated when maps are offloaded, and therefore so are units, including yours. Your character won't be a participant unless you're retired. As a resident of attacker or defender's sites you might be involved, if you're hearthfolk or guard then you're certain to be in it.

In adventurer mode, missions and rumors about armies on the march aren't guaranteed to be current; you'd have to check legends to see whether the battle already took place. But whether it's over or not, you can always locate the attacking camp on the outskirts of the defending site and run a commando mission against the invaders, or against the offending site if your side happens to be attacking. If you have the helpy need to scratch, you can always go in and offer to escort residents to safety, and if that works your adventurer can swell with righteous pride and bask in the gratitude for their good deeds.
