Dwarves won't stockpile wood 0.40.01
« on: July 08, 2014, 09:13:08 am »

Just what it says.  The wood isn't forbidden, it is accessible, I made sure hauling was on, made sure I was putting up the right sort of stockpile.  They won't touch wood (ahem).  Things like food get stockpiled just fine, thank God.  I'm picking it's because of the new types of wood, maybe.  Anyone else seeing this?  I will be making a bug report on it, just wanted to see if anyone else has had this.

I'm not sure if it's related or coincidental, but new plant types are kinda fishy: somebody reported not being able to brew the new plants, you not being able to stockpile new woods...
Part of a bigger problem?

What kind of tree is it? Mine have successfully stockpiled pine, willow, cherry, apricot and almond. Still can't get my dwarfs to brew plump helmets though.

Could be.  And it seems like wood might also be hostile: I have a combat report of a chunk of wood attacking my Stoneworker and breaking her leg and hip.  I wouldn't have known had I not suddenly seen the C and checked reports.  Well maybe not hostile: am picking it somehow fell on her.

ETA: The woods not being stockpiled are rambutan, avocado, and paradise nut.

Yeah, could of fell on her, when your woodcutter chops a tree down it falls in the direction they are facing, and a pile of wood could of landed on her.

Hmm.  Sounds like I might finally have to get off my butt and use traffic designations :D

Have you made sure that the stockpile in question has a wheelbarrow count of zero? If the wheelbarrow count is 1 or more, dwarves will (well, would in 34.11) only use wheelbarrows to fill the stockpile, even if there weren't actually wheelbarrows available for that stockpile.

Or just be careful :) The piles of wood dropped seem to be.. sort of random. I've had 4 come down, and 12 on other trees, so it can cover a decent square. I try to move my guys inside before cutting near the wagon, or just start at the edges of the map. From what I've seen the tree/wood piles will never fall towards the woodcutter, so just make sure your herbalist isn't underneath trying to pick up some potatoes or something when it goes down XD

Do you have dwarves set to ignore wood in the options menu?

I'm stockpiling apple and pecan wood just fine, though they left the very last apple wood log behind for some reason. It seems like it depends on the plant.

Update:

I didn't even make wheelbarrows yet, but somehow I did indeed have it set to ignore wood.  I don't even recall doing that.  Mystery solved.  Thanks, everyone!

The mystery is not solved for me. My dwarves ignore wood. The stockpile for wood is correctly configured. Don't know how to solve this. Currently my carpenter is hauling every single log himself all over the map. I'm not happy with this.
