Finally beat the first trial. In the end it was my DPS that was the problem. Swapped to a 2 hander, put on Rage & Attack speed support gems, basic melee'd him to death. 40%+ Honor Damage resistance also helped.

NGL, I'm dreading the other trials. Trial of Strength was supposed to play to melee's advantages. :\

With the bugfix in how much honor is lost to the dots in the trials I went ahead and did my third trial last night and picked up grasping wounds as another defensive layer, it's nice to have and also my main attack is using supercritical (100% increased critical damage, 20% less critical hit chance) which, with the way it stacks I think if I took gore spike I might have remove supercritical so I put that decision off to if I ever beat the 4th trial. I'm not really sure if it'll be a good idea, but at least it's interesting.

Currently doing t3 maps, around level 67 monsters when I'm level 72, maps are very easy thus far with my build, and Sanguimancy sorta finally come in useful since I'm mostly only fighting packs, having an hp buffer against instant kills has probably saved me a few times. I have access to a unique belt that gives 50% of damage taken as mana recuperation, I'm considering taking the damage is done to mana keystone and wearing the belt so my mana pool can act as an additional defensive layer.

Mapping is maybe a bit boring, especially at the start, just ripping though packs of somewhat underleveled monsters as I try for ever rarer combinations of resists and max hp increases on my gear. I've probably not gotten a gear upgrade for 15 maps, and my resists still suck, I guess I need to work my way up to higher map levels to get better gear to drop.

Aye, and to a lesser extent the Viper as well. She doesn't have a hard cut-off like him but past a certain point you just don't have any space left to dodge everything she throws your way.

In the end a rando offered some freebie upgrades and a helping hand which got me over those hurdles. Act 1 cruel was a bit better, afterwards but I was still struggling for upgrades and I honestly saw no way of pushing my damage further, even with god tier gear. Skills and supports just don't scale nowhere near as hard as before so you're forced into using multiple ones, but lightning just doesn't have that much to offer aside from abusing spark it seems. Because even with double boosted shock and extra crit on top my arc was just not doing enough against most trash mobs, let alone anything tougher.

And to illustrate how feast or famine the items are, my boots are an ilvl 12 I got back in act 1, but because they had a decent mix of hp, resits and movespeed nothing I found or 'crafted' for 40 freaking levels afterwards came close to being even a marginal upgrade, let alone something good.

So I decided to roll a monk using a bunch of twink gear I found along the way, and what do you know melee is actually decent in the early game if you start off with a fully geared character. Even with that I still die to some of the bosses because you just gotta stay in the danger zone to deal damage most of the time. I shudder to think how something slower and with weaker gear like the warrior would feel.

Still, the update they've pushed before the holidays was a step in the right direction in terms of both drops and some QoL stuff so I'm optimistic it will get better over the next year.

Finally chewed though enough lower tier maps to get to the point where tokens for the 4th ascension trial are dropping. I gave it a go. With a combo of bad luck and some mistakes I only made it to the final boss with about 1500 honor so I didn't expect to win but lol. Lamo. It wasn't even close, I fought him for over 5 minutes (where he mostly just stood in a corner doing attacks that didn't have the range to reach me, get fucked melee characters I guess) did like ~4 million damage, and only took out like 20% of his health bar then he killed me on his first special attack. Crazy, when most map bosses and even the previous trial bosses die in like 10-30 seconds, the jump up on this guy is insane. Maybe it'd be understandable if he was a boss from one of the end game side activities, but you need to kill him to get 1/4th your ascension points. I guess it's back to spending hours grinding for another token and then an hour or so going though the trial again, hopefully with some better luck on modifiers...

Beat the trial on my third try. Second try I died to a unavoidable instant death that you need either the movement boon or a weapon swap into blink to avoid, good game design that. :)

With the movement boon (which I had on my third try) I'd say the final boss was actually pretty easy for my mage... He has insane hp, but except for the instant kill and a few special attacks he just stands away from you doing attacks that are either melee range or trivial to dodge outside of melee range. Makes for a long boring fight of mostly standing still shooting at him. GGG really hates melee characters.
