Ice traps?
« on: May 05, 2009, 06:01:41 pm »

I have a permafrost fortress with an underground river and a magma pipe so i need some advice on how water is effected by climate so i can start trading goblin popsickles. ;)

In a freezing biome, any water exposed to open air will freeze. This can be used in devious traps. See The Degrinchinator.

In regards to your question, any water belowground (i.e. directly below natural rock or dirt) will remain water, and any water not belowground will freeze rather quickly. I've also seen people do clever things with magma and warm walls to keep water liquid.

As far as I know, in a freezing biome, surface water remains frozen all year round; in a cold biome, water is frozen most of the year but thaws in summer, and in a temperate biome it freezes only during the winter, but local climate can influence exactly how long it thaws or freezes.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

In that case how do water coverings and waterfalls behave when exposed?

And what about HFS+Ice!?

Water coverings won't do anything, but waterfalls will freeze solid if exposed to the light. If you freeze a waterfall's destination, it'll overflow.

I am so building one of those on my trade depot.  Truly inspired dwarfing.

In one of my older forts I used a pond that was frozen 2 seasons of the year to execute prisoners.  The trick is to keep the level of water a bit low so they dont drown early.

It's the one advantage the elves have over us: they can eat the microwavable dinner flesh of their enemies.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

O=O constructed walls

line one, lava warms ceiling to keep water floowing in system. except over actual road.
Line two, screwpump draws water onto road, wetting goblins, but not doing much untill
Line 3 lava atop retracting bridge heating road from floor is drooped out of the way into the resivour, no longer  heating the road.

return lava to thaw.

Couldn't we create a toggleable frezzer by pumping magma in and out from underneath a water source ;D

Toggle-able, yes, but slow, since pumping 100% of the magma out would be almost impossible, and you'd have to wait for those last 1/7 tiles to evaporate.

(Well... you could have a 2-level magma flow, so it would only have to drop below the upper level - that would be quicker.  And if you used pumps, it could go much quicker.

I wonder... if you had a large area of, say, 3/ or 4/7 water, and invited the siegers to wade into it, and then removed the heat... hmmm...

That just leaves 'em cold.

better off with a big cistern above a long pit the gobs have to walk through.  Hit lever 1 to lock them in and then lever 2 to dump the water.

edit:  hmm thats pretty much what the one in the vid does

Toggle-able, yes, but slow, since pumping 100% of the magma out would be almost impossible, and you'd have to wait for those last 1/7 tiles to evaporate.
Three words: Bauxite Floor Hatches.
And with enough pumps, refilling it to thaw them would be relatively quick. Just add a small intake that allows you to refill when to much magma evaporates, and you're done!
