Traps and Friendly Fire?
« on: October 18, 2011, 09:02:48 am »

Hey Everyone,

So I've designed my fortress entrance defenses and thought it'd be cool to put weapon traps in my barracks staging area.  This way, when/if the goblins make it past my archers, they not only have to deal with my trained melee dwarves but also dodge several weapons traps I've placed here and there for flavor.

My question is - Will the weapon traps I place attack my dwarves as well if they accidentally dodge into or walk on them during combat?  While this could lead to additional Fun, my intentions are to kill goblins not help them.  I know upright spear traps can hurt dwarves (danger room) but I didn't know if the same applied to weapon traps or rock fall for instance.  Thanks everyone!

If they fall unconscious, then they kill them.

Then he made grudge wit about 20 other dwarfs (still don't know why - perhaps they were stealing his chair).

Yes, if a dorf falls unconscious- Say, from the pain of a goblin flail- whilst standing on a trap, they will trigger it, but normally they simply walk over it.

I'm fairly sure normal dodging won't trigger them. I believe they will get triggered if one of your dwarves gets thrown by a goblin, however, or if a dwarf is thrown onto a weapon trap during a sparring session.

I've never had it happen with weapon traps, myself, but I have had a dwarf end up caged because he was thrown onto a cage trap while fighting goblins (a charging goblin collided with him and sent him flying, as I remember).

Webbed dwarves will trigger the traps they stand on as well.  I think stunned might as well, but I need confirmation.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

So to clarify if someone were to erect a retracting bridge over a 5x5 pit and drop a squad of migrants onto a 5x5 room of traps, those traps would trigger on the dwarves? If so then I have a new addition to the "how to get rid of migrants" thread

They would trigger if the fall made them unconsious or otherwise fall over on them. Stunning from the fall might work.

Just 250 upright spears will do the job nicely, plus you don't need to mess around with any pesky mechanisms. Just jam 'em in the ground and stand well back. I just finished a 3 z-level spiked pit and oh how I love the splash of gore.

Yeah, I tend to add more steps that necessary. But somehow the image of floating silver hammers beating people to death is less disturbing than dropping dwarves onto hundreds of spikes. Maybe it's the degrees of separation. Sure I'm dropping the dwarves next to the hammers, but who's to say the hammers will ALWAYS kill them? But the spikes just make me shudder...

Welp, time to install the spikes. Can't have no pesky feelings getting in the way of an efficient fortress.

Spike traps are different though. Lever activated spikes or gravity-drop spikes (the same trap can work as both) attack everything equally, including your dwarfs.

With the unconsciousness thing, I find that having lots of cage traps around can be quite useful when your dwarfs are fighting titans or forgotten beasts, because when the dwarfs get knocked unconscious on a cage trap they are caught in the cage, and therefore cannot be finished off by the FB.
