I dunno, gaining 2 levels from one demonstration is just soooo tempting.

I did 4teacher+4different skills last game and just put them all in the same squad, and they turned out great quickly. I added an extra recruit to see how fast those 4 would teach him and he rocketed to a 5th axelord. 4/5 chance of a great demonstration, plus they could keep training with each other. Gave them all masterwork steel and they never got hit again

They both work well, really. Would need some *serious* !!SCIENCE!! to determine which is precisely better, in which ways. I'm not sure the required amount is even feasible. Would need hundreds of dwarves tested rigorously for a conclusive answer.

I basically agree with everything in the 2 previous posts.

One thing i'd like to add, in the current fort i'm playing, i stuck a rookie into my initial squad just after they hit level 11 weapon skill, and he caught up really fast - so fast i ended up making him a 3rd captain and giving all 3 of them new recruits. Currently (end of 3rd year), after one rookie died and was replaced, 2 of the rookies are around weapon skill 8, the other is at 18 and has just been promoted, and the captains are 20, 20 and 19. The 19 is my militia captain - that first rookie i added actually overtook one of his teachers in the second year. Everyone has at least level 3 in everything other than biting, closer to 5 on the captains, which also have shield user at 10 or more.

Ultimately i think there's so much RNG in the game that results are going to vary pretty much every time, but it does seem like the key is a) small squads of equally-skilled dwarves to power-level weapon skills (really, i think demonstrations could use an XP boost, or at least maybe some of them), and b) the teaching skill can definitely be used to great effect.

Edit: reworded.

I think when the student becomes the master situation, that could be due to how smart the dwarf is. Spatial relation, memory, feel for their body, intuition - all that stuff. But honestly, I'm not THAT much of a micro-mang to only place such and such a personality in the militia. End of the day they are meat shields.
