I just had a human child appear in the middle of my fort, got a message like a 31 FB/Titan. He is listed as friendly in the units list.

Is this a bug? or somehow intended?

[reference images: 1 (where the child appeared), 2 (message on the announcements screen)]

EDIT: he promptly left my fort, scattering dwarves and animals in his wake. I don't know what to make of this.

The same thing happened in my fort. I was notified that the peasant has come. Found this in a cage trap near the fort's entrance:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I don't know if he was in his monster or human form when he tripped the cage trap, all I know is that when the message popped on the screen, he was in his human form and caged. The message appeared a few days prior to migrant wave.

(Yes, the tundra is covered in blood. It only rains ELF BLOOD here in Fangchambers.)

Later, he turned into this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've got him in my test chamber and will do some !!science!! with the other test subjects. Already tried to place a vampire dwarf in the same chamber and released him while he was in his human form and listed as friendly. The vampire attacked him and beated him down.

So is there a confirmed increase in birth rate, or is it that a lot of migrants come with a free foetus ? A quarter of my dwarf are children now, and they keep appearing.

Before this version, your dwarves had to build relationships from scratch.  Now, they come from world history and will frequently already be married.  Married dwarves tend to have lots of kids once they get started.

(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

I am getting pig iron and steel from my traders, but no iron. Normal? I think I've heard of this but I'm curious about details.

@paulcall

From other posts, I read, the statues and slabs, blow their cover.  We might be able to find that answer in the flavor text.  Not sure.

It happens when the civilization doesn't have access to iron ore.  They don't have iron ore, so they can't bring iron.  They do have access to the reactions to make pig iron and steel, so they bring pig iron and steel, because DF doesn't check to see if they have the necessary raw materials for the reaction.

Is there any way to breed snakes?

edit:
since there are no snake hatchlings I can find anywhere, I guess the answer is no. Oh well, would have been a cool first defence, dropping a load of giant, venomous snakes on the invaders.

does have a lays eggs though, so I'm going to try

Is there any way to decorate armor/weapons? The wiki says you can't, but goblins have decorated stuff. Goblinite only feature?

Also my count/mayor has decided that taking a several year long break is a good idea. Any way I can get this idiot working again?

Yes. Once the wound is healed. Completely.

You need a nest box for egg-layers to lay eggs. Then to keep the layer undisturbed so the eggs will hatch. Turn off the edibility option on those eggs when you do see them though, Dwarves get hungry.

So is it normal that this can take, well, quite a few years?

Shure wish a vampire would come to my fort...
