The one that came back...
« on: February 28, 2012, 05:13:40 pm »

The year is 118 and a new report just came in.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As my dwarves have heard these cries before and we had our trapline set up to capture the masters of the dark arts that resided in the nearby Tower, it was time to check the traps.

But, the captured individual was someone the haulers had seen before, even had dinner with in their legendary dining hall.

Somehow, the suspicious man that came to join the ranks of the fortress four years ago had returned. Returned you ask? Well, the poor man had died three years ago because the cruel overlord of the Fortress suspected foul play when he inspected the history of the new migrant. He was put in a room and locked up together with some office supplies as to spend an eternity updating the fortress supply administration.

However, without the master or other dwarves noticing he developed a peculiar but desperate thirst, an unexpected phenomon seen as how the migrant handled himself when tested for any symptoms of the much feared vampire disease. When dwarves heard the desperate cries for help the suspect, as he had been nicknamed by his overlord, was freed and as he ran for the booze supply to drink and quell his thirst, the blazing heat of the land he lived in strook him down. The man recieved a final resting place in the Fortress and his corpse was put to rest in a casket.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This sudden turn of events made the overlord question his methods of interrogation considering the new immigrants, but as the overlord had personally attended the sessions where this suspect was deemed immodest and suspicious and yet this indidual clearly was not a vampire, something was wrong. The overlord recalled that the suspect had blown his cover by faking his identity; the name he used during the interrogation did not match the papers of identification he had brought in his backpack. A new investigation was started but as no results came up, the case was put to rest along with the poor soul's remains and people moved on.

Now, in the only filled cage of this raid, the dwarves directly recognised the foul necromancer. Despite his transformation he had chosen to take the original nickname his overlord branded him as a honorary title, while his old working title after so much work updating the fortress administration was tattooed on his forehead.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Had this man cheated the fortress guard and faked his own death to escape his cruel fate?
Had he aquired some divine support to avenge his passing as he died an innocent man?
Or has the evil twin of this suspicious individual risen to raise his brother from the grave, only to be halted by the first trap the dwarves had set out on the plains?

Maybe someone pretending to be someone died and the person they were prentending to be attacked and the game has got very confused...? :P

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

I like to believe that a necromancer revived the clerk in his casket, sneaked him out, introduced him to the dark arts and then after three years let him go to take his revenge..

Dwarf Therapist recognizes the caged prisoner;

The only dwarf with more social skills in the Fortress(which contains 110 dwarves of which 30 are children constantly socialising in the grand dining hall) is the locked up vampire Mayor.

That can only mean he snuck out of his coffin(/corpse pile) and stole away like a  goblin in the night. And has returned for good alcohol, I suppose.

Awesome paradox.

If you [t] over the dwarf's coffin, are there any bones left in it?

The coffin has a partial skeleton, which may deliver a new explanation..

The corpse could have been split up somehow, partly raised, escaped and/or gained a ''name'' by killing something and then became a necromancer and returned.

The main issue lies in the fact that the corpse in the fortress is a the fake identity that was used by the migrant, while the necromancer and his information in dwarf fortress are his alter ego. His alter ego survived and returned while his 'fake' corpse has already been partly digested by maggots.

I'm using the version that Ironhand uploaded of 00.34.02. I modded the raws for Exotics, some things regarding FPS[clothes etc] and ethics[slaughtering animal men as I intend to raise their remains for undeath experiments].

The corpses' last name and the Suspect's last name are different - could he have faked his own death with a decoy?  ???

That tends to happen with those under a different identity.  They retain the same first name but different last name.  Watch your vampires, in adventure mode you can be assigned "Kill Urist Logamesh" but the only person nearby is "Urist Kolona" or something.  When confronted, they're like, "HAHA!  I am Urist Logamesh!" and then rip your throat out.
