I was back at the mountian homes, sometime early Winter. Minding my own business sittin in my office eatin some
-plumphelm roast-, one of the few comforts of beeing a cleric in this distopian pile of rubble.
Suddenly some jibbering maddwarf comes bursting through my door, yelling something about polar bear and queens and not wanting to be the only "player", whatever that means. I figgured he was just havin a mood and wanted ma leftovers or some such nonsense, he was welcome to take em. But then he goes and grabs me by the arm, dragging me into the hallway, I begin to fear this fella may be fell. With no intention of beeing made into some Armok dammed artifact sock, I broke free of his grip on me. Expecting a fight I put out ma hands out infront of me, but to my surprise, I recive not a fist but a stone tablet thrust into my hands. My stomach sat uneasily, no one sends messages by tablet, no one except thous dambed royals. I hastely take the tablet from the dwarf, now shouting something about kennals and trade deports or something. I read the tablet.

----------ROYAL DECREE----------

IN RECOIGNITION OF YOUR SERVICE
TO THE MOUNTIAN HOMES AND ITS
RULING POWERS, YOU ARE HERBY
PROMOTED TO THE RANK OF:

EXPIDITION LEADER

YOUR NEW DEPARTMENT OF SERVICE TO
THE CROWN WILL BE OF:

WAR POLAR BEAR TRANNING CORPS

YOU ARE TO DEPART FOR THE PREVIOUS
TRANNING CENTER TO ARRIVE THE
COMING SPRING.
THIS PROMOTION IS MANDATORY.
-----------------------------------

A joke, surely a joke. War polar bear tranning corps? I've never heard such a thing! Though it's definatly not like the royals to play jokes, at least that don't end in mass death anyway.

Turns out it wasn't a joke. After long preperations and putting together a team, we finally set out to find this insane "outpost".

Ok, we're finally here, I think, all I see is an odd looking dirt hole that appears to be close to leaking. On closer inspection, I found a few workshops and what appears to be some sort of animal pen (empty of course). On my way in, I noticed
some scratchings on the wall;

     RAIN BURNING
   RUN, RUN FROM THE RAIN...

I figgure it to be grafiti and move on.

This whole place is in a sorry state, but rather than complain, we must get to work. I assess my priorities to be as follows:
BUILD DININGROOM
DESIGNATE FOOD STOCKPILES
DIG THROUGH AQUIFER
ESTABLISH BEDROOMS
SETUP FORTIFICATIONS
MOVE DININGROOM BENEATH AQUIFER
BEGIN FOOD/DRINK PRODUCTION

-more entries coming shortly

Ok, so we need somewere to assemble, it's dam cold outside. This hobbit hole dose at least seem to have a couple of large empty rooms, so lets make one of them a temporary diningroom, the other can be for food storage. Sorted, now we just need to get the mason to make us some tables and doors and whatnot.
NONE, there is NO stone ANYWERE above the aquifier, this is already starting to look bad. Left with absolutly no other option, I order the carpenter to make them. The thought sickens me, dining round wooden tables, sitting on wooden chairs, cowering from the cold behind flimsy wooden doors like some dambed elf! Still, we have no choice, for now.
We finished the dambed furnature and set it up in the make shift diningroom, it cold, dank and dirty with water dripping and leaking from the walls. The previous party sent here seems to have left some mess and refuse lying around the "fortress", so I ordered the men to take it outside. Not a minuite later do I hear shouting coming from the enterance. I assumed the worst, I mean we have been sent here to tame polar bears....
To my surprise and notable shock, the comotion is over a bird, or at least I think it's a bird, whats left of one anyway. It's couvered in bruses and blisters, not regular blisters you get from the cold, huge swelling blisters, like from some sort of plague, we look outside, it is not alone. A whole flock of these birds has been taken down just outside the fort, all with the same symptoms. I notice oddities in the snow, like it was just raining, grey and black spekals, making a noticable smell aswell. This can't be a coinsodence, maybe the grafiti on the wall was right.
We can't risk taking any casualties this early on, I forbid everything the rain has touched and order the men not to go anywhere near where it has fallen.

Next, onto the aquifer.

I've had a little expiriance dealing with aquifers in past, so I at least know where to start. I had the miners dig out a collumn and bridge over to it so we can set up a support system ontop, it dosen't take long. Next, the carpenter, under my guidance, gets to work setting up a crane system to support the collumn one we tunnel under it, I have him rig it up to a lever nearby (although out of the way of posible flying debries ofcourse). The miners channel under the collumn and the bridge is removed, leaving it completly hanging from the support.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, the miners channel a hole down, into the aquifer, which as expected, immediatly fills with water.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Click! Thwak! BOOM!!
A complete sucess, the aquifer has been punctured.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now I'm not sure weather to be confused or amazed. It seems the plug falling into the aquifer caused all the water in the chanel to be blasted out upwards, this I was expecting, what I wasn't expecting was for it to FREEZE MID-AIR! That's right, the escaping water has frozen solid into some sort of armok dambed ice sculpture!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As strangly beautiful as that may be, it's deffinatly not safe,we can't dig through the aquifer tunnel until we break this thing up, guess we better start chisseling.
After much tediousness in placing and removing floors to try and mine away this dambed ice feature, we are finally left with a nice clean tunnel through the aquifer, now lets put in some stairs, it's bloody freezing out here!
ARMOK DANGIT! Turn's out were dealing with a multi-level aquifer! Theres no more dirt left up here to make a second plug and I can't make heads or tails of what the carpenters rambing on about using pumps, dosen't he know aquifers are infinite?
Suddenly, idea. When the plug fell in and the water got blasted out, it flash froze right? well why don't we freeze the aquifer! Well not the aquifer exactly, more we channel out the area around out future staircase and then wait till it frezzes and use the natrual ice as a wall.
We quickly put my plan into action. It works! we finally have a path through the aquifer and a clear route to presious stone. Praise the miners! (and me ofcourse).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's now the 16th of Malachite and the stairs have been put in, we have couvered up the hole to the surface with whatever dambed materials we could find, the astetics don't matter, it will soon be buried in snow anyway.
I should mention, we had a few close shaves and nearly lost the miners when trying to freeze the aquifer, that thing freezes up fast! Fortunatly, no one was harmed, I've no idea where I would find another miner out here.

Now after such a test of my inginuity and engeneering brilliance, it's going to be good to get back to something more straight forward. Setting up the bedrooms, and of course moving the dining room downstairs and filling it with some nice -rock throne-'s. And with all the stone that will be left lying around, we can finally get to putting up some walls, I don't trust this drawbridge setup the previous inhabitants left us.
23rd Galena, with the stone coming from the future diningroom, we have the base level of the wall finished, it dosen't look like much and it wouldn't serve much as a vantage point for marksdwarves, but it's a wall, it keeps bad things out, thats good.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Some migrants arrive, and for once in my life I'm grateful to see them, we could use a little more dwarfpower.
Oh Armok no! They've arrived in the middle of the contaminated area, surely they will all die. I must seal the fortress to make sure none of them trail it inside conatminating us.
Odd, there not dieing? Ah ha! Now I understand, this rain isn't capable of contaminating us through our shoes, of course! I quickly opend the gates to let them in, they seemed quite relived, and very cold. From now one we know then, as long as your wearing shoes, the rain will only harm you if you are caught out in it. We all owe the great debt of this information to my excelent reasoning and deductive skills.
12th Opal, the first of the new bedrooms have been completed, along with the new diningroom and a new food storage area next to it. Things are looking up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Someone comes bursting into my new room, he is yelling loudly and flailing his arms around, well this looks familier, hopefully this one will give me a tablet telling me to leave this forsaken place. But no, it turns out that this one is actually having a mood and wanted some uncut gems from under my bed. I saw him rush off to grab some dog leather that was laying around on the floor (we really need to clean this place up) and wisk it off to a workshop. Lo and behold, he created an artifact, a pretty nice one aswell actually, even if not that helpful.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well it's got a nice high value around just over 30,000. Maybe I can use it to bribe one of the overseers to dismiss me from the horrible place.

26th Granite
And another! It's only been a few months since the last gibbering idiot and now theres another one running about the hallways. This ones a child and is gathering piles of wood, I think I'll leave him to it.
And an even more useles artifact! and this ones not even worth anything.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What in Armok's name is thi thing for anyway? I think it's something humans like to wear, never seen a dwarf with one, and its made of wood even! Noting this one down as a posible elf sympithiser, I will be talking with his parents.
I have some extensive plans for the defences of this fort, something that should make it start to actually look like one. I'm going to have the masons build a two level high double thick wall with fortifications on top so as to provide standing space and shelter for marksdwarves. It must be 2 stories as the enderance to the fort is at the intersection of two levels (as most forts are). I will also have them put in some ramps so as to gain access to the walls when nessasery. The design lends itself to the addition of towers in each corner later on, if we are to have an overseer with such ambition.
21st Slate, Finally, it is finished, this is now worthy of being considered a fortress, as opposed to just a muddy, leaking hole in the ground. The grandure of the walls is indeed impresive and dominates the otherwise barren landscape.

It took a considerble amount of stone to build and so more bedrooms were dug to provide for it, I don't see that a little forward planning could do any harm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And so, my work here is pretty much at an end, I shall wait around until the next wave of immigrants comes, which should hopefully bear another leader for this place, I would hate to see all my work fall into ruin.
It is now nearly my final day, from the fortifications we have sited the next group of migrants aproching. While looking around the fortress, I see an old forgotten tablet, it bears the mark of an overseer. It is mostly worn away but I can make out something about details for an elaborate kennal design, I guess this makes sence seeing as this is suppose to be a war animal traning center. The design seems reasonable, but my time here is up, I shall leave it on the desk for the next expidition leader to deal with, besides, the overseer that assigned it probably died here anyway.

ok, now i'm going to go put in the screen shots.
also, in the write up I forgot to mention that I have actually sighted polarbears on the map! this could actually work!
the fortress has been stablised, though we are a little low on supplys. 25 dwarfs living and 8 dead (the previous party), all dead have been properly memorialised in the courtyard (ie. next to the refuse pile).

A warning to future leaders, -dont let children out side, children won't claim clothes and so will have no shoes, stepping on the rain will probably burn their feet off or something. also, make lots of shoes.
