La Troisième République
January 1st, 1936
Let's survive the German onslaught

Albert Lebrun - President of France

Historical Background:

It is 1936, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party assumed control of Germany nearly 3 years ago. The Italian Fascists are fighting a war in Abyssinia. The Nazis have repudiated the just Treaty of Versailles, by seizing the Saar Basin and beginning their re-armament. The Japanese Empire is asserting its claims on Chinese lands. All the while, the British and Allies continue to yield to the fascist aggressors. What can the Free nation of France do to prepare for, or possibly prevent, the inevitable?

Game info:

This game is Darkest Hour: A Hearts of Iron Game, by Paradox. It's basically a really good HOI2 mod. Anyway, we will attempt to either a) hold off the Germans for as long as possible when they attack, b) Somehow avoid becoming involved at all, c) Do something entirely different as this game can be quite unpredictable at times. With the help of Bay12's superior tacticians, I will allocate IC, research Nukes stuff, conduct diplomacy, and fight war. I'll begin actually playing anywhere from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST today (lol). If there are any questions, suggestions, concerns, complaints, etc. Feel free to ask/yell at me at any time.

March 15th, 1936

The German military, in another violation of the Treaty of Versailles, has begun positioning troops in the demilitarized Rhineland. In response, French troops are being diverted from the central areas of the country towards the heavily fortified Maginot line. Additional fortifications are being constructed along the border with Belgium as well.

April 21st, 1936

Other than a disagreement between German and British diplomats, and a right-wing coup in Cuba, the past month has been very quiet. We have lowered our espionage spending in order to bolster our cash reserves.

May 10th, 1936

The first round of fortifications along the Belgian line have been finished ahead of schedule. Another tier of forts will be finished before the end of the year.

June 11th, 1936

In a recent election, the French people have decided to elect the Social Democrats to office. The Czechoslovak people have had a similar election as well.

The Fuhrer himself met with allied leaders today, assuring them of his peaceful intentions. We don't buy it, the British on the other hand are oblivious.

In other news, the Italians are wrapping up their military operations in Ethiopia. Refugees have been pouring into our colony in Djibouti.

July 12th, 1936

Egypt has today declared independence, nominally, from the British, they remain part of our alliance.

July 17th, 1936

Civil war has broken out between nationalist and republican forces in Spain today. We will keep a close eye on the events as they unfold.

And so the Republic has arrived at a crossroads, should we increase our mobilization and begin deploying our troops? Or should we sit idly by, awaiting our enemies next move?

We should intervene directly if possible. We cannot allow for the germans to have two fronts against us.

Agreed. It could also send a nice message to our supposed Allies - Facism is the enemy we all need to face.

Seconded. We should be able to grab a good chunk of Germany, since their army will be deployed against the Poles and thus will need time to turn around to face the glorious French Army. Poland is probably screwed anyways, but at least we'll be much, much closer to liberating them.

Why in the world do you people think that germany would invade Poland? They have no territorial interest in Poland compared to us. They'll try to retake Alsace-Lorraine.

July 22nd, 1936

On the Spanish front, our British allies are refusing to send aid the Republican forces, while the Soviet Union has committed resources to their cause. Meanwhile, the Nazis and Italians have sent military aid to Franco's Nationalist forces.

We lack the money and supplies to get involved at this time, however we can issue currency, which will raise 800$ at the cost of -1% industrial efficiency. Should we intervene, we would have the option of assuming military leadership of Republican Spain (with an additional cost), or we can simply send resources.

Send resources, but don't intervene. The civil war is going to turn Spain into a hell hole, meaning that their army won't be battle-ready when the war is over, and several years after that. Obviously we want the Republicans to win, but we obviously can't commit to a war with the aggressions of Germany looming over the horizon.

I say we directly intervene to crush the fascist german allies.

As in an all out declaration of war? We might be able to get away with it without the Germans/Italians attacking us outright, but it would bring our belligerence up a bit, making it easier for the Germans to war dec us at pretty much any time. Tis' a conundrum if I might say myself. Sending aid would decrease relations with the fascists, but that's about it, and not even by that much (They don't really like us that much anyway). I'm willing to take any course of action though, hell we could break off of the British alliance and invade Switzerland, anybody?... No?...

If Germany retaliates now, then I think we may be better off than if we give them more time to remilitarize. They have been hit hardest by the economic crisis afterall.. In any case, I think it's better because we can't money and recruits, but we have plenty of troops to spare, right? If Spain fell to fascists, then half of our neighbours would be fascist, which sounds dangerous to me.
