Fractal Octagon Fortress Design
« on: June 09, 2012, 10:46:06 pm »

I got an idea for a new design, and here it is. Also, here are some csv files for quickfort usage. So far the design seems to work nicely for the early game, but I haven't gotten very far using it yet. The large open spaces make for a nice place to dig out first, and used as a staging area. The four large square empty spaces will make nice pump stacks. The rooms are designed to accommodate almost any individual purpose, with each dwarf getting a bedroom, workshop, stockpile, dining room, etcetera. The design takes a large number of doors and hatches for peak performance. The large spaces can be nice dorms, dining halls, statue gardens, etcetera. The entrance will have to be different, but with the variety of possible stairways to connect to it should be fine.

An image of this design in action would be nice.

although it isent the most space efficent design it is very practical and it is easy on the eyes compared to other designs, bee fortress? where 1000's of bees do the work instead of thousands of dwarfs??? "come on guyes we can lift this rock!!! its only one pound and 1 regular dwarf can carry it with a little trouble! thousands of us SHOULD be able to do this!!!"

Why the flux would you do this. You DO realize, do you not, that that one fortress level shown contains roughly TWO THOUSAND staircases? And that the extremely high number of diagonal passages will create a similarly astronomical number of pathways from Point A to Point B? Care to image what that's going to do to your FPS?

The pathfinder is not forced to evaluate all possible paths from A to B.

still it suffers a lot when there are plenty of staircases around

It's very pretty, but I worry that it will make the pathfinding AI shoot itself in the head the first time a dwarf tries to get from point A to B if it spans multiple levels

I do plan on having three levels of space between each iteration of this design to accommodate plumbing and prevent cascading cave-in failures.

What exactly are you planning to implement above this that could cause cave-in accidents?

I'm a big fan of military engineering. Strategically placed supports, falling objects, and other fun hazards. Not to mention safe is better than sorry.

I saw this layout and liked, but, as mentioned above, the pathfinding would be terrible, so I changed it somewhat to make it less open and separated the rooms a little an made them bigger to fit an 5x5 workshop. This is the end product:

The image was enlarged, each hive is 7x7.
A more basic one, without the connections between rooms:

I'll see if I can make some .csv files to share.

Edit: Here it is Basic version. I'm still working on the big one.

Edit2: Now the second, The big one

Funny my brother who can never get into DF is always calling in a "Glorified Beehive simulator" I tell him to go play Cod and leave me to my dwarves !
