Which tileset should I use?
« on: July 23, 2012, 10:37:12 pm »

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum...

At this point, I only use Dwarf Therapist and dfhack.

I would like to try using some kind of tileset.

Any suggestions for which would be the best choice?

I don't want to mod anything in my game.  I would just like to try some graphics.

I use Iron Hand graphics. You can see what it looks like in my Let's Play videos in my sig. I think most people use it or Phobeus but I don't like the Phobeus curved corners.

I say use Mayday

I either use ascii or mayday, the other tilesets seem so corny to me

I switch between Taritus, a slightly-modified curses_640x300 with diagonal wall corners, and the Vidumec tileset, which looks like this:

I use this color scheme to make some of the darker colors more visible.

If you like small tilesets, the Dorten tilesets are also nice-looking and quite readable.

You can mix and match too if you want.  For instance, I use the CLA tileset with the Ironhand Graphics (dwarf/creature images).

I like Gekz for its clean lines and compact size.

I recommend CLA.
Jolly Bastion is also cool if you like the style.

I use "ASCII" (codepage 437 really, but they call it ASCII here).

I use the square tileset that comes with the game. It looks a little off in places (some tiles lack symmetry), but... it's square, and it comes with the game.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

From what I have seen extensively watching streams, lets-plays, and screenshots, Pheobus and Ironhand seem to be the two most widely used... after that it seems to come down to individual personal preferences.

I like Maydays graphics. Used to be pretty popular also, but there is no official update for the current version yet.

The correct answer is whatever set you prefer.  Although I think there's only 3 fully graphical sets, Mayday, Phoebus and Ironhand.  Phoebus gets updated the most regularly from what I can tell, though I prefer the look of Ironhand.  Most of the other sets are variations on ASCII, though a few here and there use graphics for some tiles.

The LNP launcher can swap out tilesets quickly, and you can add new sets to it quickly if you want to try out several.
