Indeed, but it does keep things somewhat interesting. Hell I'd even say Corai veered into Badass Cripple territory since he ran down and mercilessly murderized the bugbear with a gimped leg. I also have a question as to what I should use the bar of Orichalum I bought. How is it for weapons?

It's pretty good. Heavy, so maybe better for blunt weapons. Better than steel all around, I think. It's an alloy of Mithril, Gold and Platium, which gives it its weight.

Sounds expensive (which it was.) I think I'll set that aside for when we have a master weaponsmith then.

By early Galena, the settlement was in high spirits. No thieves or snatchers were seen in nearly two weeks and Skull was becoming a master in his art of bone carving. Usi organized a formal celebration of Muscov's birth, and they also decided to celebrate the births of Frost and Cobra as well as a sign of respect to Cobalt's children. Feral saw no harm in this, after all if they were needed they were always close at hand, and getting to share stories from home was a good way to pass time and help build the bonds of the little clan. Some proposed that they dig a separate place for newcomers to live, with the current residents staying in the stockade. Others thought that unfair; They had enough to live comfortably as it was, why not share it with others who made the journey? They had also decided to rig up weapon traps near the log bridge spanning the river, as they had piles of otherwise unused daggers sitting in one of three bins and some weapons too large for them to use. Who knew, maybe they'd be the difference between life and death? A few days after the last trap at the ancillary door was rigged up Silver Xelics were spotted. They had little to trade, and apologized for it. Evidently they'd been robbed by bugbears in the area. However, once trading was done, Corai handed in the usual report. While the purchase parts were blank it was clear that they wanted to be ready with the ledger showing things they'd never even bought yet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Soon bodies began piling up, one gravely wounded violet xelic and several of his comrades falling to the  pick and dagger laden weapon trap by the ancillary. Soon humans were also spotted, which greatly rose Feral's spirits, as he recognized many of them. As they came in, the tell tale sign of inturders was heard as bugbears in the hills started shouting challenges. Splint and Lev came rushing in, out of breath, having narrowly avoided being hammered to death. [Legitimately shocking. I was expecting them to run up hill.] “Six of'em boss... Chieftain’s got a spear....” Lev said trying to catch his breath. Splint recovered faster than Lev did, and said he wanted a weapon, any weapon, so he could help fight. “Why would you want to fight? You're a maker of arms and armor, not a wielder of the same.” Wax said as he assembled the Battleminers. All were armed and ready, save Slade who'd arrived armed not with pick or mattock, but with a scourge and dagger. “You sure you know how to use those?” Mona asked. Slade looked at his weapons and shrugged. “I'll learn quick. So we off the chief and the rest'll scatter yeah?” He asked the group. Usi nodded. “He'll probably be leading the charge, so if we down him, we can pick off the rest at leisure if we can catch them.” “First time ina real scrape Splinty?” Mona asked the smith. He nodded. Clearly he was afraid She looked at the dwarf and noticed something etched into the breastplate he'd scavenged for himself. “May the gods be with us” in dwarven runes. “It'll be alright. We have a reason to fight, those brutes don't.” Slade said as he kicked a dead xelic snatcher from the doorway. Wax took the lead, bellowing “The gods side with us this day!” And lead the militia out.

Where the chieftain was, none could say but quickly the group moved to engage the hammerbears. Wax met the enemy first of course, and planted his pick in his opponent's midsection, while Splint charged another hammerbear. Further away, Usi severed the arm and leg of his prey, while Mona popped the same bear's guts out of a massive tear in the beast's armor. Splint could be heard flying into a frothing rage as the bug bear landed two hits that did little more than bruise. Meanwhile, a second hammerbear attacked Wax who had managed to remove both of his first foe's legs and his weapon arm. “So you wish to meat the gods of death as well? So be it!” Wax said in a challenge to the second aggressor. Splint meanwhile, finally managed to find purchase in his enemy's leg and with a follow-up strike tore away its foot. Slade scored the death blow on the opponent he, Mona, and Usi were fighting, his scourge silencing the bugbear.

Eventually Wax's first foe was left a silent amputee in a puddle of his own blood, and he turned his attention to his next foe, as did the other Battleminers while Splint continued to batter his foe with the steel pick  in his hands. The bugbear swung its maul haphazardly, Splint parrying it and counterstriking with a limb severing hit to the armpit tearing away the hammerbear's entire left arm.

Then a foot.
Then the other arm.
Then the rest of the leg
Then disembowlment.
It was clear Splint had become blinded in his rage as to just how much damage he was actually doing.

Wax meanwhile, swung on but missed the second bear to try and face him. The group was beginning to waver and try to flee. Wax however felt that would be too merciful of him to let it live and managed to hook it by it's hand. And took said hand just for good measure. He then knocked it over and plowed the forward spike of his pick through it's head, putting a rather obvious hole in the side of the helmet. By the time the group had gathered their wits from the scuffle, they saw Splint had resorted to beating the bugbear to death with a now quite bloody mess. “Splint?” Slade said tentatively, not wanting to get a rock sent through his head. “What the fuck do you want mother fucker!?” Splint yelled back, hand stopped mid swing with his blood coated rock. “There's uh... Still a couple more to best man. Come on.” Splint pondered this despite his mental state, whacked the dead hammerbear once more, and wrenched the pick out of the corpse.

As soon as he saw the bugbear however, Splint was lost once more as he attacked, angrily charging the bugbear chieftain. It cost Splint his left hand, as well as his self-respect as Wax rushed to  his aid and smashed his pick into the brute's head. Shortly thereafter, the sole surviving hammerbear was left dead, Wax having wheeled around and hitting him with a backstroke. Stone and Targe cautiously came out of the ancillary when the cries of battle ceased, Stone instantly rushing to help Splint to the dormitory before he bled to death. “Don't worry man, you'll be ok. I promise.” He said to the wounded fellow. Wax stayed at the battle site to provide security as Targe went to fetch the others to clean up the battle.

Meanwhile Corai heard horrid cries of something that sounded wounded, and saw a number of mangled bugbears facing him. Several were clearly dead, others yowling pitifully or not even awake anymore, the pain from a mess of broken  bones and shredded muscles being too much to bear for them. Corai moved quickly and managed to fumble his sword out and moved to put the invaders down, which over all went quickly, if a little noisily.

[So yeah! Adding those traps to the choke points made thief alerts suddenly nonexistant. Roughly five thieves/snatchers were pretty much reduced to corpses or in one case captured. The only bad thing of note is Splint losing his hand, but thankfully that won't impair his ability to swing a hammer to forge new tools and weapons. He basically lost his shit after he got two superficial wounds and seriously fucked up one of the hammerbears. The spearbear on the other hand.... yeah. Corai got to get in on it a little as well, decapitating one and putting down what amounted to a mess of dying animals.]

Nice!

Be warned, though, Chaos Dwarves have Trap Avoid (same as normal dwarves) so you can't rely on your traps against them.

I didn't include them or the Dyansauri. Didn't see a need for them and didn't need a competant enemy.

Ah, ok. No need to worry about them, then.

I'm almost positive there's another ambush in the area though. Something just seems... Off.

The following day, Mantis had Wax lead the Battleminers out on a patrol, feeling as if there was some enemy force watching the stockade. Sure enough, several thieves were found more or less blendered by the traps, and a lone hammerbaer was captured, though he refused to say where his tribe was hiding, but a patrol revealed that it seemed they'd abandoned their chieftain. Soon rain came, and began to mercifully wash away the blood and vomit coating the areas where the traps had been rigged. It was also taking some time to clean up the battle areas and traps, simply because of the sheer amount of severed limbs. A herd of giant boar were also seen rooting around the mess, occasionally rooting up bugs or nibbling on the dead bug bears until the dwarves approached to clean up the mess. Feral even happily reported to Squid and Targe that one had blundered into the cages they had lain out so long ago.
A thief was also spoted, but Corai made short work of the poor thing. It was messy to say the least, as the little dogman thing tried to flee, only to run into Corai who's hasty sword swing cut its throat, spraying a small font of blood as to Kobold collapsed on its knees gurgling blood. It tried to crawl away, only toget a leg removed, worsening it's blood loss problem as blood, rather than spray was simply leaking out of it's ripped open neck in a troubling quantity. It did however, with a wild swing manage to break Corai's arm, causing him to stumble and fall into a cage trap, and needed to be let out, though his enemy dropped dead shortly afterward from blood loss. A second was seen not long after running away from Skull by the log bridge. Of another not was the cages finally did their intended function, as the traps began to slowly capture more of the herd of giant boars, and couple with the two they'd purchased earlier in the year, they would make a fine herding animal if they could manage to domesticate them. Trading was also concluded, the settlers ridding themselves of several loads of unneeded or worn out attire and armor. And with successful trade of course came the usual report:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, as they had several prisoners (two of which Corai said would make good zoo specimens) they decided that as a temporary means of ridding themselves of the rest and freeing up cages by tossing the prisoners off the watchtower onto some spears. They also decided, since the freeze was looming, to use their recently acquired arms to rig up additional traps along the corner of the stockade until a gate was up. The looming presence of kea people was also worrisome. They covet shiny things, and the forge had several in it. That was a problem for another day however.

[Ok, so another update! For some reason the hammerbear leader's buddies abandoned him, we finally have wild critters beign caught, and kea people are probably plotting to steal out livlihoods. Corai got hurt by a kobold of all things and also, probably due to his rapid killing of wounded bugbears, has earned himself the title The Earthen Numbers of Conneting. Summer trade has been concluded. Any ideas on what I should mak my ward iron and wrought iron into? And just how shitty is green copper for weapons?]

Hmm. Well, Green Copper is a bit stronger than normal copper but also a bit lighter. Honestly, unless you're hard up for weapons and armor it's almost always better to just use it for crafts since it's worth a decent amount.

The Ward Iron should be used for Armor of some sort. It's...just about the best material for Armor in the game. So I usually use it for Helms. The Wrought iron is ok, a bit heavier than steel but generally much lower quality. If you plan on making a Blast Furnace, though, it's handy to keep around since that needs 1 as part of its construction.

Hmm. Guess I'll make it into a mace since it's heavier. i can make or buy more wrought iron later. green copper as crafts is a go, and the ward iron shall make a shiney new helmet.

“I'd say we're getting' pretty good at taming these big bastards!” Targe said happily as he successfully played a game of tug-of-war with a giant boar. Well, more like get-tugged-around by s giant forest boar, but the boar was noticeably more tame than it was when they started. “Come on, come down and fight me!” Mantis was heard shouting up at the squawking kea folk. “You aren't getting our livelihoods, so fight or leave!” She'd decided to watch over the forge in lieu of any bugbears or goblins to fight. The humans also tried to take potshots and strike out when one tried to roost on the stockade. When one tried to make off with their weapons, amazingly enough a sugar beetle was clamping it's tiny maw on one's leg as Mantis decided to go around to eliminate them if they stopped on the ground, which one was dumb enough to do as she neared the corner the flock insisted on being a pain in the ass from. In two quick strikes she sliced away it's foot and then clove it in twin, the upper half flapping about for a moment before splattering on the ground. A second with Corai's sword in hand fell next without it's head, and a third bled to death mid-flight when, amazingly Mantis' child grabbed it and held it long enough for her to slice off and arm and leg. [As per fine dwarven tradition, Mantis bringing Muscov into battle turned out to be useful.] Meanwhile, Squid went inside with a full barrel of booze. “Drink up Corai, I don't want you awake for this.” she said. “Can someone get me a table or lay a door across some chairs or something?” “I'll go throw one together.” Feral said. Suddenly a very irritable Mantis came in with a bin laden with weapons. “These are going upstairs until those things are all dead or all left. I;m tired of them constantly trying to make off with Corai's sword.” The keafolk had been truly irritating. They'd slowed work considerably, attempted to steal a valuable sword twice. Thankfully the flock was diminishing slowly: The humans' crossbowmen had shot down two and pegged a third with a headshot, which resulted in it splashing into a pond. Skull also killed one that had grown frusterated with its tribe failing to steal and shiny trinkets. The irritable bird man pecked at him only to be backhanded and pushed down. “Come on bitch! Show me whatcha got!” He said defiantly. The kea screeched at him in human, calling him a mudbeard which sent Skull into near rage. The bird got up and rushed at him, going airborn and trying to kick him tyo which he reacted to by ducking the kick and grabbing the kea man's foot and bent it until it broke and twisted into shapes not found in a bird's foot naturally. He delivered two quick jabs and a hammer fist into the lower body of the kea man, causing it to vomit all over itself, but, bile flowing out of its beak, it managed to peck him in the head, though it only managed to pluck some loose beard hairs. “UGH! YOU DISGUSTING LITTLE PRICK!” Skull said angrily, biting into it's forearm as it threw a punch at him. He finished the fight by angrily grabbing a nearby stone and smashing the impertinent bird man's skull into an unrecognizable bloody mess. He looked up when he heard the sound of a hatch opening. “What the fuck...” He muttered as he saw the kea folk the still lived roosting on the top of the dormitory.

“GAH! WHO LET YOU IN!?” Slade shouted in surprise as he saw a kea man rifling through the weapon bins. Slade charged and shoved the kea man into the wall and grabbed his scourge out fo the open bin and lashed it in the arm, taring away skin and feathers. The kea man jabbed him in the chest and tried to flee, but a kea man landing on the hatch prevented this, and a disturbing crack came as Slade struck the bird in the side, his scourge shattering its ribs. The kea man fell down the stairs and lost consciousness, to witch Slade responded to with a quick kick to the temple. Slade called for Osprey, who came in quickly daggers drawn. “Watch the hatch! I gotta tell Mantis they're tryin' to make off with whole bins now!” Slade rushed out and locked the doors behind him. Osprey marched up in time to meet a second intruder. “Like shiny shit do ya?” He said with a grin as he roach up and latched the hatch shut. Suddenly the intruder surged forward and shouldered him into the wall to try and escape out the front door, only to run face first into the door which wouldn't budge. “No escape for ya!” Osprey shouted as he tackled the man-bird, driving one knife into its gut and the other into the joint of its leg, yanking ina manner that severed it completely. He then wrenched the other dagger out and stabbed it home into the kea man's skull. “Hell yeah!” Shortly after, Feral came in to see the ghastly mess. “Errugh.... Get that cleaned up. Osprey, you and Slade watch the dining room until these pests are gone. Someone get in here and start dragging these bodies before they rot!” Sure enough, not five minutes later they could hear the sound of one on the roof, its taloned toes scrapping against the adobe. “I got with one.” Osprey said, heading for the roof. Slade nodded and waited in case one decided to try and slip in. However, by the time he got up and closed the hatch, the bird was gone.

A roadbed was under construction now, if only in a hope to give merchants a safe(ish) route that avoided the trees and the hills. Also the fallen Xelics were having the rats and rotted goop scraped out after nearly a month of rotting outside the stockade, their chitin being processed to useful chitinous plates. It was also clear leather would have to be the obvious solution until they could process their rope reeds to make pants and such.  Also, on the 4th of Sandstone, Frost was finally up and about on her own. Feral was worried though; it was generally when they were walking on their own that they tended to get snatched most often. The day after was also cause for celebration, as Corai was finally treated in full.

[Tada! Betcha thought I forgot about it! Well we got no migrants yet again, a flock of kea people was decimated, Corai was treated and Frost is now blundering about solo. Maybe when we begin ore extraction we'll get some people (if we have any ore that is.) It was late when I wrote this up so pardon it if it's sub par.]
