The uncatchable fish
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:40:56 pm »

So I have been trying for a very long time now to make a system that would automatically filter the fish out of seawater that I put through it, now I think I'm starting to realize that fish that appear in the ocean are not actually there? They are "uncatchable"?

as you can see I have the ocean, with plenty of fish and such animals in it, draining through a series of tunnels and wall grates off the edge of the map.
Fish and other sea creatures enter all of the time, I even have cage traps set up where the darker blue marks are.
Yet when I close the floodgates

No fish remain after the water has dried up, and there are none caught in my traps
they just simply...
Disappear!

Somebody please help me because I'm going to spend who knows how many countless hours trying to get this to work unless somebody knows that it does not work >.>
couldn't find anything on the wiki, actually the wiki says that you can catch sea fish.

A laudible effort, but ultimately wasted without edited raws.

Fish are a kind of vermin-like creature, without persistent entities like larger animal types have. This means they cannot be filtered this way, and litterally pop in and out of existence.

Some even mysteriously fly around like bluejays. (Lungfish!)

Your traps will work at capturing the fish, if you modify the raws to remove certain entity tags, but the fish will promptly "drown". I don't know if you would be able to process said fish or not.

Those fish can be caught by fisherdwarves if I understand it right.  I don't think they will actually catch those individual fish though.  Seems to me more of an indication of the presence of those fish on the map for fisherdwarves to catch than anything meaningful.

That is an impressive system though.  Sooner or later some creature class fish is bound to wander in, and you'll catch those just fine.

The game differentiates between vermin and standard animals, based on size. Cage traps will only catch standard animals.

You will not capture the smallest "vermin" fish, however you will capture the big ones such as carp, pike, and other large water creatures.

also catch, breed and tame carp. Do it.

Oh yeah, Olm men, giant olms, merpeople, crocodiles, whales, and all that lot are totally gonna ger caught in that, but for some of those, it wouldn't be sufficient to cause airdrowning deaths. Additional countermeasures would need to be implemented if intending to deal with large aquatics on the general sense.

Either harpooning whales, or taming sea serpents, he's your guy to go to about the ocean!

Found the link for ya.

Ahhh, thank you for the info, now my mind is at ease about the
fish.
But it is exciting to know that I can still catch some larger creatures! I will be looking into this shortly as soon as I have a day off from work...
And yeah, I know of Sphalerite
I read his thread about catching and breeding sea serphants, ingenious I must say. I will go back over tp that thread to look for some ideas

But I would indeed like to breed carp.

Heh heh heh....

I'd object to being trained, too.

England probably wouldn't take kindly to someone else catching Wales either.
