Sheb's European Megathread: Remove Feta!
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:27:05 am »

Well, , there is a significant number of us that weren't lucky to be born the in the EVER FREEDOM LOVIN' AMMURRICA (FUCK YEAH!), and prefer rotten cheese and socialism to guns and freedom. So this thread is for us to bitch about our politicians, both at the European and national level (You may need to add a bit on context if you post sutff about your national politics, since not all of us know the intricacies of every European country's politics.)

Since I'll be in charge of regulating this I'll blatantly copy the American Thread's rule. So no whining, no semantics, no flame, no ad hominem (Even against libertarians) and source your damn thing. I'll also allow some leeway in terms of what exactly is Europe (So Turkey or Russia or Iceland would be okay), but don't overdo it.

And to kick things off I'll speak about the EU's new budget. That it needed to be trimmed in time of austerity was a given politically, but they basically did it by slashing investments, while keeping the CAP msotly unchanged, and then stuffing the budget full of pork to get everyone on board. People may say the EU lack the legitimacy of a nation-state, but one thing is sure: when we try, we can be as dysfunctionnal as the US congress. Yeee-ha!

ITER didn't sustain any cuts, so I'm happy.

Though the cuts to both Galileo and GMES are worrying.

But yeah, it's budget proposal that has clearly been bought rather than negotiated.

Those of us living in areas described as "deprived" or "economically disadvantaged" (yes, its a joke that parts of the UK are designated such under EU rules when places like eastern Europe exist)  will probably be hardest hit. A lot of EU funding is directed into both public and private work around here (north west Wales) due to a lack of any other kind of investment at all. I suspect Cameron was one of the leadrs in the cut, seeing as he appears to be trying to keep his party happy by letting some distance grow between the EU and the UK, what with his referendum promise and all should he somehow stay in power next election.

Well, you'd be surprise, but large part of Eastern Europe are now totally develloped. Places like Prague are richer than most place in Western Europe save the capitals.

Also, the poorer places in Eastern Europe (like Bulgaria) get huge amount of money under those schemes too.

The joke is the relative lack of money that the UK has spent on helping those areas over the last 20 years, more than anything. Though devloution and local government has much to account for - more than national government.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Sorry, that reminded me so much of this:
Europe just doesn't like each other.  It's like a family: they get along, and don't actually kill each other, but damnit they try.
I'll show myself out.

See, that's the problem with current politics. Everyone watches and nobody says a thing.
PTW

I had too.

As for who going to win next election, it's a tossup now. Still, you'd have to be a colossal idiot not to smell an opportunity for new parties coming out of the woodwork, so long as they're sympathetic enough (e.g, more so then UKIP) to trigger the underdog reflex.

You guys should do what the Japanese did.  Threaten the independence of your central bank until they stop being morons.  We'd all be much better off for it.
