The Prosperous West
Exactly What You Think It Is. Maybe. Probably Not. Definitely Not.

The year is 1861. Businessmen based in California and Oregon have risen up and used their private militias to depose the pro-Union government of California and set up a new government with the most influential businessmen at the top. For now, Popular opinion is favoring them. The Union has not yet responded to this crisis, but if the Union should decide to fight back against the new Pacific Republic, there are already plans in place for a defense albeit very hastily made ones. You are the businessmen at the top with none of you above the other as none of the businessmen has had time to make an accurate calculation of his assets' worth.

Name: Atticus Reynolds
Gender: Male
Company Name: Pacific Republic Railroads
What your Company Does: Oversees the building of various railroads across California, and also the operating and implementation of train services.
Background: Atticus is a young business man who managed to claw his way to the top of the railroad industry in California before the civil war, since then he's been viciously trying to beat out his competitors and maintain a monopoly on railroad construction in California. California leaving the Union has only made it easier for him due to multiple Union based companies being kicked out, and he wants to ensure they don't come back by propping up this fledgling republic with his influence.
Political Standing/Beliefs: The entire country should be heavily industrialized with a strong focus on the implementation of nation wide public and private transportation.

Name: Richard Richardson (I'm not good with human names  :P)
Gender: Male
Company Name: Sunnyside Farm Ranch
What my company does: Produces crops such as corn and oranges. Also sells cheap (relatively) wine. Has multiple barns which house cows, pigs, and chickens. Also hires people to pull out pesky "weeds" which are bad for the crops. Has a monopoly in the food market. (Are we allowed to start as monopolies or do we start out in the bottom?)
Political Standing/Beliefs: Believes in the result, not the process. Making good by doing bad is much better than being a hero and unintentionally ruining peoples lives. He thinks that food should come from a respected and safe producer...ahem...Sunnyside farms... ahem, rather than multiple untrusted producers.
Background: (Woops, forgot this.) Richard always liked seeing things grow, metaphorically and literally. He always had a garden where he would plant beans, and when he was a young teen he helped pay to kick start his dropout friend's new business. The business quickly grew into what would be Sunnyside Farm Ranch. Alas, his friend had died, and in his will it was stated to be given to Richard and used in any way Richard pleased. Now, the Ranch is a monopoly controlling the food market and feeding the people. Richard is determined to keep it running in memory of his dear friend.

-snip- (Ar we allowed to start as monopolies or do we start out in the bottom?)
-snip-
You guys are the richest businessmen in the state, so I assume that you start out as a major player or monopoly in your company's field. Your monopoly might not even last that long anyways.

Name: Vivian G. Enderby

Gender: Female

Company Name: Enderby, Thompson & Bartwich Developments

What your company does: a merchant bank with a history stretching back for about 200 years and run primarily by the Enderby family for the last 100 or so, Enderby, Thompson & Bartwich have a stake in a whole mess of business enterprises in the West - shipping corporations, mining operations, farming conglomerates, munitions factories, all sorts of things, some of which (the two most prominent examples would be the Martindale Printers' Association and the Mahegee Liquor Company) they even have a controlling interest in.

Spoiler: Background (click to show/hide)

Political Standing and Beliefs: Vivian believes that the main priority of the New Pacific Republic should be the development of free enterprise in the region, though she also hopes to align the country with the Union and help them crush the Confederates, preferably with minimal bloodshed on their own part. The Cult of Yrg is all about freedom, and the abolition of slavery is one of its main bywords as a consequence, rendering its beliefs incompatible with the doctrines of the South.

So, does this work?
