Benevolent Ghost
« on: June 23, 2013, 06:30:05 pm »

...I just had a ghost tame 3 wild boars for me.

The ghost in question migrated in while I was waiting out a goblin ambush. I still had my engraving-hands full from the previous failed migration wave, so he had a chance to resurrect.

He then proceeded to take meat from my meat stockpile and tame the wild boars languishing in cage traps outside. This isn't speculation, either: I watched him float over the cage, meat in hand. Then the meat disappeared, and the alert popped up that the dwarves of the Indigo Stockade now know a few facts about wild boar training.

Is this awesome y/y?

Edit to add: I am using DFHack but as far as I know it doesn't do this automatically, and I hadn't tried to claim this dwarf with makeown or anything.

This is pretty awesome, remember Urist McFriendlyGhost's name and remember not to slab him until he turns violent (if at all). Use him to train and tame very dangerous animals in a contained environment, if he fails the creature in question cant kill him and cant escape. Cage and try again until its master-level tamed and domesticated. Then dance with glee as you drop tons of easily tamed predators on unsuspecting goblins.

Pemmican is pretty incredibly durable. Corn and rice also lust forever without refrigeration.
Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

Start killing animal trainers and see if you can create a workforce of tamers who won't sleep, eat, drink, or go on breaks.

I found a human city named Sleevevirgins. It was easily the biggest city in the world, so clearly I wasn't the first person to come inside the city's walls.

See this old topic: Industrious ghostly fisherdwarf

I can't find anything on the bug tracker related to this or the fishing.

you all are missing the most important point here: how to weaponize?

If Urist McFriendlyGhost can be any vocation (so far fishers and animal tamers have been reported), it is theoretically possible that UristMcFriendlyGhost could be a hammer dwarf too. The exact nature and cause of friendly ghosts that do work needs to be investigated, to see if it can be triggered as an exploit for science.

maybe is how they die? otherwise every fisher and tamer who've died would be coming back as ghostly labour...

Maybe it has to do with how the fisher labour works?, fishers and hunters and I presume tamers get stuck on their job until completion, failing or getting sleepy/thirsty/hungry, maybe if they get killed while doing their jobs they get stuck on it even in the afterlife?

Let's say UristMcFisher is fishing and he gets a goblin arrow through the brain before being interrupted?

If such a report exist, it should be classified as "Won't fix - too awesome"

For reference, according to Dwarf Therapist, Tekkud Tekkudotad:
  • Is quick to anger
  • Occasionally overindulges
  • Can handle stress
  • Very distant and reserved
  • Assertive
  • Not a risk-taker
  • Strives for excellence
  • Is self-disciplined

It's possible that his striving for excellence and/or self-discipline are what has him continuing his work in the afterlife. If this is an intentional behavior for ghosts of this personality type, kudos to Toady.

He has 11 points in Persuader and Siege Engineer, 9 points in Judge of Intent, Negotiator and Comedian, 3 points in Animal Trainer, and 0 in Armor user/dodger/wrestler/observer/fighter (most likely gained in the course of his grisly demise. I hadn't checked his xp in animal training before, but right now it's 1890/2600; we'll see if he's able to learn. I'm also enabling fishing on him; we'll see if he starts fishing, or if he's limited to what was enabled/what he was skilled in in life.

I'm going to set up a siege workshop soon and see if he'll take workshop jobs! I kind of doubt it - I suspect from the fact that we've only seen ghosts fishing and animal training so far, that ghosts won't take jobs generated by buildings, stockpiles or designations. I wonder if he'll take feed/water patients/prisoners, and/or recovering wounded?

Wow  :o

Did the meat go through walls with him?

I didn't see him actually go down to the stockpile - as far as I can remember, it appeared in his hand. The type was an intestine of something I had recently butchered, though, so I assumed it came from the stockpile. I'll observe more carefully once one of the semi-wild wild boars reverts. Good catch, thanks for keeping me honest.

Now he's hanging out in the training zone, teaching my dogs the art of war. I wonder if they'll follow him around?

you all are missing the most important point here: how to weaponize?

Slab a fisherghost carrying hundreds of fish while he's floating in the air above invaders?

The Hunting labor might be interesting.
Hunting usually requires a crossbow, quiver, and bolts?  Unless Urist has some ghostly equipment, I'm not sure if it would work.
If it does, then you can create a friendly invincible defence force.
