How did he know I have platinum?
« on: July 08, 2013, 03:42:14 pm »

So I had a weaponsmith with preferences for battle axes and platinum mood, and as soon as he claimed the forge - before I unpaused - I forbid all bars except steel.

When I unpaused, he refused to take the steel. I used DFHack showmood, and it said he wanted 3 platinum bars. Just to make sure, I first unforbid the pig iron, then the iron - no dice. Sure enough, when I unforbid the platinum, he snapped it up.

So... if I didn't have any platinum, would he have just hung around and gone mad? It's not naturally occurring on my map - I had previously imported some in preparation for war hammer/mace preference dwarves' moods.

Also, platinum battle axe: battle or decoration?

Third option: Weapon trap near entrance to whack passing goblins (or their mounts) and break bones.  I had a gold short sword thus placed that was useful for crippling goblin mounts as they approached the gates.  Slowed them up and made them much easier for the marksdwarves to fill with bolts.  And since it rarely got kills it tended not to jam.

Nah, I prefer cage traps. Captured goblins make the best training dummies.

Quite probably. I've tried forcing metal mooders to take the sort of metal I'd like to match with their weapon preference, and it doesn't seem to work.

The axe is probably better as decoration than a weapon, though a really strong dwarf (>4000 Str) might be able to use it effectively as a sharpened bludgeoning weapon. I would recommend making a trap of it, dropping prisoners onto it, and seeing what the combat log says.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Dear Armok, this thing weighs 17 g! :o

For comparison, a silver maul weighs 13 g.

It is encrusted with round quartzite cabochons, decorated with wild boar leather and encircled with bands of platinum. This object is adorned with hanging rings of prase and menaces with spikes of gabbro, lapis lazuli and dog leather.

On the item is an image of Cele Actiondawn the Grizzly Intensity the cyclops and Fel Bronzesteppe the human in quartzite. Fel Bronzesteppe is shooting Cele Actiondawn the Grizzly Intensity. The artwork relates to the shooting of the cyclops Cele Actiondawn the Grizzly Intensity by the human Fel Bronzesteppe in The Rhythmic Forest in 196. (It's 514 right now.)

I like to imagine that the image is delicately engraved on one cheek, practically invisible when the axe is clean - but when it's used, blood will slosh through the channels of the image, staining the design red.

That is a beautiful image. I wonder if that's possible IRL...

Why does seeing things such as this always make me want such a mood just so i can have a champion using the most ridiculously impractical weapon ever?

So... if I didn't have any platinum, would he have just hung around and gone mad? It's not naturally occurring on my map - I had previously imported some in preparation for war hammer/mace preference dwarves' moods.

Back on answering this:

While unconfirmed (I can't remember the reference) I recall reading something along the lines of...

If you have made (smelted ore, melted objects) the desired metal (platinum), the moody dwarf will ask for it.  If you subsequently do not have that metal (from any source inc. trading), the dwarf will go mad.

If you have not made it, but have possession from trading, the moody dwarf will take any available metal.  It is this one I am unsure of.  Indirect confirmation: I had made green raw glass but not clear/crystal, but purchased both from trading.  A moody glassmaker (no preferences) asked only for green glass.  This prompted my to make one of each clear/crystal, and subsequent moods have asked for both.

If you have not made it, do not possess eg traded for, the moody dwarf will take any available metal.

Learning this to my detriment as my current fort has most metals made, so my moody W/S' won't take steel.

Quietust confirmed via his disassembly or something and posted on the wiki the following:

Moody metalworkers will demand their favorite type of metal as their artifact's primary material if you have smelted any bars of it - for secretive moods and possessions, take a look at the dwarf's material preferences to see which metal the dwarf wants to use. If you have any adamantine wafers available, then they will demand that instead.
Moody clothiers and weavers who have a preference for any type of plant fiber cloth, silk, or yarn will demand that generic type (e.g. a dwarf that likes cave spider silk will require any type of silk). If you have any adamantine cloth available, then they will demand that instead.
Moody glassmakers will demand their preferred type of glass, but only if you've actually produced some of it - if not, they will randomly select one type of glass you've produced. Acquiring raw glass from a caravan does not count as producing it.
Moody bone carvers will demand shells if they like a type of shell; if not, they will demand bones.
Moody gem cutters and gem setters have a chance of only gathering a single rough gem and nothing else, producing a perfect gem with a single decoration

Incidentally, in the one encounter I've used Kesting Dobar in so far, it managed to one-shot a skeleton without touching it.

Quote
The Soldier hacks The blue peacock partial skeleton in the head with his Kesting Dobar, but the attack passes right through!

That's the only attack that was directed at the blue peacock skeleton in the entire duration of its most recent iteration of existence.

If you think about it the platinum axe is a perfectly fine weapon.

For unarmored parts (like lower legs, arms, hands, etc.) on goblins it is probably sharp enough to provide the nice and crippling amputation.  If it contacts armor that it cannot penetrate the attack gets converted to blunt trauma - where the density of platinum makes it an effective bone breaker.  So view it as a bone-breaker that can give you the disarming and crippling limb removal shot rather than an axe that simply cannot penetrate most armors.

The warrior carrying it should work through foes faster than standard hammer dwarves and thus be more efficient.

The only potential problem is the weight. That thing is heavy. But if you have dorfs who can swing it around...yeah, looks like a fairly solid weapon, actually.
