The Dwarves and Humans trade large tracts of land with one another, the former not wanting to be trapped within the center of the western continent and the latter seeking territory free from Kobolds vermin. At the same time the Humans embark on an offensive, destroying the Kobold territories near their borders. Unfortunately, Kobold agents have already infiltrated Human territory, in addition to the endless hordes of Kobold thieves that plague Human production. As iron ore is transported from the newly-Dwarven eastern territory to that of the Humans, Kobold master thieves are confused and unable to locate it.
The deep delving of the Dwarves continues without consequence (besides the rapid filling of Dwarven coffers), much to the envy of the Humans, whose territory still bears the scorch marks of balrog fire. Lady Matilda urges (by threat of castration and or death) her people to view the balrog invasion not as a catastrophe, but as a unifying and strengthening event in Human history that has shown to mankind the power of their cooperation. To reinforce this interpretation of events, Matilda has ordered the two corpses of the balrogs, which have now solidified into great slabs of supernatural, mysteriously insidious volcanic glass, to be mined up, carved into bricks, and shipped across the Freaquestian Bay so that it can be used to construct a great monument out in the middle of the city of Freaquestia. The monument would depict Matilda wielding in both hands a gigantic hammer, which would be composed of many interlocked Human bodies, and using it to strike down a balrog.
The necromancer Terenos is blindfolded and taking deep below the earth, traveling through the intricate tunnels delved by the dwarves while being led by the most gifted miner and engraver known to Dwarfkind, now administrator of all mithril mining operations (that is to say he has not been very busy recently). Finally their trek comes to a halt before an ancient stone door, covered with primitive pictographs and etchings. Behind this door was the temple that house the original tools used by the Dwarves to extract and break up raw mithril, some of which resembling mere chisels, some resembling steam-powered drills, and some totally incomprehensible even to master engineers, obviously created in a fit of fey brilliance (and madness). The foreman then walked to the end of the enormous room and dragged a beautiful stone box inlaid with raw mithril back to the doorway. Within were the schematics of all of the tools around them, carved into hundreds of stone tablets. Many of these mining instruments were constructed in such a way that attempting to reverse-engineer them would be fruitless, and as such only via study of these ancient and sacred Dwarven texts could one hope to mine mithril. As Dwarven porters accompanied Terenos out of the Dwarven mountains, the Immortal Monk only hoped that the fortunate Hobbit miners would not only use the Dwarven secrets to produce large quantities of large mithril, thus benefiting both races, but that they would respect these sacred methods as ardently as the Dwarves had.
In great droves Hobbit prospectors sail from their homeland westward towards the rocky domain of the Roc. The Hobbits, particles of dust to the great bird, delve shafts all across the island, searching for metals. The Roc can't see the defilers of his divine peaks, but she can feel a slight change in the supports of her perch, and this unsettles her. Flapping her wings and letting loose the legendary gales she is known for, she drives the portly aliens deep into the earth in search of respite. Although no damage is done to the Hobbits, a fear of the natural world itself is driven into their hearts, knowing at any moment that they could be slain by the Roc's tornadoes, and none of them can wait to get off of the island.
The Elves, peaceful and isolated since the beginning of time, have rarely communicated with the other Empires of the world, let alone come into conflict with them. The Elves lived out very simple lives, content with their simple lives of fishing and gathering plants for food, prospering themselves whilst preserving the forest that progenated and nurtured them, and happily sharing property with and caring absolutely for one another, all under the rule of their benevolent king Terra. Despite (perhaps because of) their lack of interaction with the outside world, the Elves were able to quickly become the most populous and widely-spread race without heavy industrialization or concentrated efforts to advance themselves (such as the other races attempted, at times at grave consequence to themselves). However, the Elven king has recently been urging his people to travel great distances and settle far-off lands in the name of the Elvish empire. Due to the unparalleled manpower of the Elves, this expansion was easy, but King Terra was not alone in his desire to rule over vast territories. The Elven pioneers at the eastern side of the Dwarves' southern holdings, farther from their home forest than any of their kind had ever been, were stopped in their tracks by the sight of Humans far from the lands that were thought to have been their territory. In what was believed to be territory fresh for the taking (and preserving), the Humans were already casting their nets and tilling soil with their plows. The Elves returned to their king with disappointing news that peaceful expansion at its current rate would not be viable for much longer.
