How does it store data for stuff like saving? Do you save the entire planet terrain map (or does that not have an impact on the game)?

From my experience, having big arrays with lots of pixels tends to eat up disk space. The more factors like fertility and the like that you add to the tiles, the more trouble you are going to get when people actually save the game. That is, if you plan to have more than just a few planets at once.

I don't have to save anything besides actual game data that changes a lot like populations and buildings and such. All the generated stuff(planetary terrain and whatever) can be very easily recreated when needed.

It's nice that we're getting to actual gameplay features now.

The saga of starvation continues. People now also get automatically assigned to mining the local resources. When everyone starved and populations fell, instead of getting deassigned from mining duty, they instead stopped farming, causing a chain reaction where people starved and stopped farming so they had even less food and so starved even more.

But I guess they at least managed to dig up a few rocks in the meantime.

Sounds like how it works here in South Africa. ;)

Sometimes we just leave burning tires on the tracks. Or steal the cables.

This is a thinly-veiled post to watch. This project's made some progress!

Yup. Progress is happening. It's pretty weird to think that I wrote the first post of this thread a bit over a year ago.

Food distribution seems to be working well. People get fed in the order of farmers->workers->unemployed. Newly colonized regions grow quite happily up to the amount of food produced.

I do foresee something interesting. Once I implement unemployed pops automatically migrating to uncolonized regions, the initial growth boom is going to be self-perpetuating until every arable region on the planet is colonized. Sending just a seed population of 1 to a planet should cause it to start spreading over the planet at an exponential rate before finally collapsing when the boom finally ends. Afterwards the population will fall down to the level of food production. Interestingly, since the population will be relatively stable after that point, if you were to somehow prevent the initial population boom and keep a stable supply of food, you could colonize the planet at a far more controlled rate. Yay, player interaction!

After pressing the End Turn button a couple of times I have noticed that an average sized region(which is annoyingly 11 nodes) surpasses the amount of jobs it has by default at the 32 turn mark. Might have to tweak growth so it's faster in the initial stages, but that's something for later.

IT WORKS!

Right now every unemployed person goes to colonize a new area(no travel between already colonized areas atm). This causes the older areas to grow to the amount of jobs available, and then start spreading out. Once they run out of space for expansion(they don't cross oceans at the moment), they begin to grow quite rapidly while being fed by the ones colonized later. And as predicted, they eventually run out of food. You can see the collapse of the north-eastern megatropolis in the pictures.
