Managing military
« on: September 20, 2013, 04:23:12 am »

Hi there

Is there a tool for military management ?

I know dwarfTherapist can sort dawrves by squad, but I don't find anything about changing assignment or whatnot.

Thanks by advance

Heck, only the elves would tame a leech. [...] Just for this, I'm starting up lead goblet production. Anyone who tries to sell me a tame leech deserves to die from lead poisoning.

I second that question. Managing military, its equipment etc is one of the most tedious parts of the game due to the default UI. And I see no tool being praised for making that somewhat less of a headache, which is a shame :/

Not just for assign, but giving orders, patrols, equipping they etc. Yes is the only thing I donīt like from DF cause the management is bad.

Yes I am searching a software than helps me in this point. And not just be defended by traps and mechanism than sometimes the enemies avoid.

I don't think this exists. It would be an interesting project. I wonder if dfhack's mapped out the memory addresses for this bits and exposed them in its API..

Bumping this because this is IMO the single biggest problem with the UI that needs to be addressed to make the game less of a headache for new players. DF has plenty of merits and unique aspects to get people interested, and the UI while being kind of a headache at first is mostly workable, but someone was making a joke about the learning process in DF feeling like a job, and I was about to say "nah you're exagerating", but then I remembered the fun times I have with assigning military equipment, piece by piece, soldier by soldier, etc etc. That's just awful and something needs to happen here. Yes I know I should go right ahead except I have no idea how to mod this stuff. I'm just saying this in case an intelligent fellow happening to have skills agrees with me.

Someone do something about military management!

Now if Toady said anything about revamping the military management in the next release, forget it and I guess just waiting it out is the best thing to do. But if it's not planned for the next version, someone here needs to get to work on it.

Make a single uniform and assign it to a whole squad.

Yes, that's nice when your industry is already working very fluidly and you have all the same types of weapons and armor to assign to all the soldiers in a squad. If you can't see a problem with the military part of things then I don't even know what to say.

I can, but I thought you could not know that.

This is why people usually assign different weapons to different squads?

DFHack has the gui/choose-weapons plugin which is very useful. TL;DR it assigns weapons to a unit or squad based on their topmost skill, replacing the "individual choice weapon" entry.

I see the need also, but playing DF is more fun than writing code.  Maybe if a few of us form a team it would be easier to get something together.
