Pretty sure shielding is better than a super engine. After all, for the supper engine we still need fuel, massive materials and time to move our spacestation out of range. (Laser weaponry has massive range, so it will be pretty far)

A simple particle shield held around our craft will diffuse the laser enough to reduce damage significantly, allowing us to maintain our orbital presence.

Indeed, I want the thrusters as third research program to have the ability on the long run. I hardly doubt the rockets will take longer than researching a shield too. Since xtank5s suggestion and your suggestion were both +1 by me, i was only adding to the research list :)

We could switch out the bomber drone research, but we have seen how effective just a fighter-bomber can be, so it might be pretty useful.

Hmm, maybe move the thruster research away for now. I do believe though, that moving away from that spot is vital.

You decide the best course of action is a complete and utter show of destruction against the perpetrators as you command the Primaris Platform to begin loading, and aiming calculations to fire upon the source of the large energy signal. As that begins you quickly load the HMK47 Tac Nukes onto the fighter-bombers before sending all combat drones out of their drone bays, the fighter-bombers and there escorts you have immediately head for your surface base to act as a quick response unit while you scramble the interceptors to go investigate those heat and energy signatures elsewhere. As your final precaution you move your Hunter-Killer Frigates into orbit above the planet, though their railguns will likely be of little use from such a distance all safety measures must be taken.

With the Interceptors

Its not long before your Interceptors begin to close on the rapidly closing objects, the five drones spread out in a wide V formation with their weapon safeties off, and ready to fire at a moment's notice. Its only a few moments before you realize the mistake you made as what comes into view is not missiles but some twenty-five fighters, and a frigate bristling with heavy railguns, and a handful of PD turrets.

Your Interceptors put up a valiant effort as they close managing to take out four of the enemy fighters before the formation closes into effective range for their weapons. The enemy's return fire is crippling, and it takes mere seconds for three of the drones to go up in small puffs of flame, and shrapnel, the enemy fighters swarm all around unloading with similar solid projectile weapons to the ones your interceptors used though some appear to be armed with ordnance of some kind. You know things are not going well ...

Estimated Time Interceptors Can Hold is One Minute

Primaris Platform Fires

As soon as the shell is loaded you commence the Platform's firing sequence, and broadcast a message across all channels that says, "Attacks on Defense Network infrastructure will be met in kind.  Thank you for your understanding.  Have a nice day.". Moments after the message is sent the Platform shifts slightly as the shell explodes towards the surface, within seconds the energy reading disappears and you can already see massive clouds of smoke, dirt, and possibly ash forming on the surface. You continue to monitor for sources of energy readings, and have the Eye Drones scout the surface for more batteries as you contemplate how to handle the incoming fleet your Interceptors are momentarily stalling ...

Haarald and Harmon move to intercept the enemy formation.
Using our shell's 2 Hunter Class Heavy Railguns and the railguns on our HK Class frigates, timed for approximately simultaneous arrival on target, attack the enemy frigate.
Load missile tubes with Interceptor missiles.
PD turrets and missles used to take out the remaining formation, prioritizing first the bombers, then the fighters.

How about we have have both remaining interceptors crash themselves into the enemy frigate. They're not going to last long against the fighters, so a direct impact is perhaps the best they can do.

Additionally, we could just launch a nuclear warhead and be done with it, keeping the frigates and such in reserve for when we need to do fighting closer to the station. Nukes generally have a large detonation radius, and if we let it burn, then drift, it's unlikely that they can intercept it in time.

The problem with slamming the interceptors into the enemy frigates it the enemy PD.  It might not work, and taking out the enemy bombers might be better suited to the minute they have left.

The problem with a burn then drift tactic with nukes is that if they detect and track the burn phase, plotting the drift phase and then picking it off with the PD at range is ludicrously simple.  If the nukes can be sent in stealthily though, that's a whole new ball game.

Just nuke the whole place, and start with a completely new expedition.
Research Eyedrones with anti-air missiles.

I'm kind-off hinging on the fact that he nuke won't ever get within effective point defense range. As for ramming, unless the enemy point defense utterly shreds our drones to pieces, there's little difference between an functional drone or a broken one impacting.

@detox: IIRC, the ships are coming for our core, not our expedition.

Research short range, intense power lasers. Then build small structures nearby our base (and as far as space goes by nearby I mean within one to two hundred thousand miles) equipped with low output engines, and these lasers. If we can equip them with their own power source, great. If not, research long distance energy relays (we currently use wireless energy so use the same tech here as that) and then build more small structures so as to include all of our point defenses in our energy sphere.
