Why do elves hate trading
« on: March 10, 2008, 11:56:00 am »

I was trading with some elves, I offered them a bunch of stuff, it was a good deal, and when I go to trade, I get a message saying "I must truly hate life, I should show you how they suffered".  I don't get it, what did I do wrong?  Do Elves take offense at things made of bone (not having gems I started decorating stuff with bone).

Yep.

Anything made from wood, bone, leather, meat or tallow, or just happens to be flecked with some random kobold's blood, will make the elves seriously angry and they will leave without trading.

This is why it's better to wait for them to unload their goods, and then shout "SCREW YOU!" in their faces and pull the floodgate lever.

Bone, leather, shell, wood, anything 'violently' taken from another living thing (i guess edible plants don't count...) elves do not like.

ALSO, clothing with 'goblin blood splatter' or (better yet) 'elf blood splatter' will also offend the elves.

so any clothes must be pig tail or silk, decorated with only rocks, gems, metal, and no blood splatters.

there may be a few other things, but that is off of the top of my head.

edit: damn you kagus! beat me! but i still leaving me notes... =p

Elves take offense to anything made of bone, hide, or wood. Anything that was once living. Offering or trading with anything made or adorned with those materials usually ends the trade right there.

Elves refuse to trade for wood, animal products or anything that has blood on it. Although sometimes they will offer wood despite their taboo!

Now I shall get some popcorn!

My good friend, I would like to introduce you to the "S" key.

When trading with elves, it is your best friend.

(The second is simply not offering them decorated items.)

Maybe the wood they use it from trees that have falled down at the end of their natural lives rather than having been chopped down.

They can sell you a log.  You can take that log, and make it into an earring.  If you try to sell them that earring, they will get offended with your blatant tree-killing ways.

Just kill the lot of 'em.  They bloody well ask for it.

It's worse than that, actually. You can buy a log from them, then try to sell it right back on the same trade screen and they'll get all huffy. I usually just ignore the elven merchants. It's not worth my broker's time to go tell them to piss off. Heck, it's not worth my peasants' time to haul a stack of elf bone bolts to the depot to piss them off with.

Not even for....  Sunshine?

That's pretty much what I use 'em for.  Buy some sunberries or sunberry seeds off them, and get to growin' glorious booze!

Nah, who needs sunshine.  I mean, I'm sure most of us shun it like the plague, and all sunshine does is make dwarves sick after they spent a year or twenty underground.

Any booze named after that unholy flaming orb can't be good for you.

The elves that come to my fort bring nothing but cloth bins.  It isn't even worth the trouble to seize it.

Do the elves also get offended by cave spider silk, even though it's cloth and didn't actually kill the cave spider?
