Should there be any rules beyond not striking the earth?

Yes - I'll post my suggestion(s) below
No way!  That one rule alone is enough to create a challenge
Huh?  Sorry, I was watching the fluffly wamblers play
I could care less, but it would be difficult

The Aboveground Challenge!
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:01:13 pm »

They said we were mad.  No dwarf could ever live under the harsh, yellow glare of the magma-ball in the sky.  No sane dwarf would dare to claim the surface, like some sort of short, hairy elf.

So be it.  Sanity be damned!

In this challenge, your team of 7 completely unskilled and clueless beards have embarked with only a single rock of Gabbro, a couple pack animals, and lofty ambitions.

Oh, and a strong fear of the dark.

The goal: without once breaking the earth, can you build a Mountainhome?  Can you out-elf the Elves?

STRIKE THE SKY!!!

Save is here: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=8570

-----------------------------------------------------------

Feel free to post your attempts on this thread.  Pictures, stories, and ideas are all welcome!

This is a non-competitive fort challenge; a way to kill time until the next release.  Have fun!

Year One:

Spoiler: Status (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Dwarf list (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Ground Floor (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Second Floor (click to show/hide)

So far, so good, though I fear the coming of the first ambushes.  No metals makes for a very poorly equipped wrestling squad, indeed!  Hopefully we'll survive until next Autumn, and the Mountainhome will send out all of the coal, lignite, and steel we've requested, in return for all of the delicious snacks our kitchen is pumping out.

Goals for this year: build an aqueduct, and a raised entryway, so our beards can have a nice shower on the way into and out of the fort; train and equip our militia, to make the most out of the flimsy wooden swords we're wielding; recruit and train a marksdorf squad.

Who else is in?  I just know that you can do far, far better than I!

Just downloaded the save though I doubt I can survive for very long without rocks and gems to make the crafts that the merchants so desire.

Clay is available on the surface - I made sure of that, when choosing an embark.  You can do it!

One question. What type of embark is this? It has fairies and fluffy wamblers.

Joyous Wilds.  Plenty of animalpeople will populate the map, as well - because hunting can make things too easy, otherwise.

Oh! I think I'll try to have a go at this.

I prefer playing with few dwarves, so I set the pop cap to 45 and edited the raws so sieges can still come. I edited the raws so sieges come earlier.  No changes besides that, though.

Disappointed that the stone isn't microcline. Everybody loves microcline. :p

Well, that sort of makes the challenge of providing for a full compliment of dwarves a non-thing - but this isn't a competitive thread, so I'll leave it at:

Glad to have you aboard, Henny!  Looking forward to seeing what your take on this embark will turn out to be!

I suppose you're right about that. I realized I would miss out on titans as well, so I changed it to 100 instead.

Thank you!  :)

Will give it a try.
So, basically, we cant dig anything - no mining even for materials, right?

1st Granite, Whateverth
The place is full of life and should be a great site for our mighty mega-project! We're somewhat short on resources and skill, but we're able to survive on what we have, for sure!
So, the only stone goes for klin, wagon wood will go for carpentry and training axes. Others go gathering plants!

Oh, so many animals are here! Aadvarks, tigerfish, otters, sponges.. and alligators. I hope they won't cross the river.

You are correct.  Ours is the only Dwarf colony ever to be afraid of the dark.

This thread is why I love dwarf fortress. We start at engravings of wagons and end up using necromancy to raise them from the dead, and were-wagons.
I jumped off a ramp in a cave and exploded.

Too late - just by joining, you've done something amazing!  If there's anything you get stuck on, don't hestitate to ask for guidance; this is most certainly not a competitive challenge.
