Warp City, the City of Gates - Warp City has a history of mystery and magic.
Once upon a time, teleportation circles were installed in every major city, university, capitol and place of interest. Travel was relatively affordable and convenient.
Then shit went down. Perhaps it was an experiment gone wrong, perhaps there were too many cracks in spacetime, perhaps all that teleportation warped the fabric of reality too much for it to bounce back.
Teleportation circles disappeared, taking with them the buildings they were in and random chunks of every circle-marked city on the planet. All the random buildings and good chunks of the population ended up in one place, gathered in a non-euclidian pocket dimension outside of the known universe. Architecture, culture, and survivors from all corners of the world are mismashed into one abrupt and patchwork city, cobbled together like a puzzle assembled from pieces from mismatched puzzles.
Reality is still cracked there - access to the real world is possible in certain places, and travel around the world still happens. The city isn't cut off from the world, but it is separate, a city made of but not a part of the world.
The fabric of spacetime is screwy. You can take three steps in the right places and cross the city, or looking at the back of your own head. Shortcuts and secret paths riddle the City of Gates, and the locals have grown quite good at marking known ones and discovering new ones as the patterns of altered reality slowly and unpredictably shift. Your front door might lead into the street one day only to drop you into the middle of a church the next.
