Hematite 5th, 1051

One of our new guards, Asmel Oslankeng (a glassmaker by trade before we drafted him) was seized by a fit of excitement lately. He's gone into the strangest of moods, bubbling about how he absolutely must have a glass furnace. I don't ordinarily abide by foolishness, but I've ordered one hastily assembled to see what comes of this.

Hematite 10th, 1051

The damn fool demanded green glass, was standing right at the furnace, and yet wouldn't make any or let anyone else make it! Not that anyone here knows how. Fortunately, we managed to find a piece amidst the piles of junk in the Depot, and after pointing it out to him, he instantly seized it and rushed back to the furnace to do gods-know-what with it.

Hematite 15th, 1051

After many long days of work (the rest of us guards building a roof for the mausoleum), Asmel showed us all the fruit of his work. I must admit, I have never seen a more perfectly cut piece of glass. The way it catches the light... A symbol of might in crafts I'm sure, but I must also admit some disappointment. What is the use of the thing?

Malachite 4th, 1051

Long, busy, uneventful days. We've finished the roof on the mausoleum. I don't suppose the blood shall ever be cleaned out, but now we have somewhere to store the dead, when they happen. We've installed a third slab, in honor of one of the prisoners who perished several months ago and has been rotting in the grass since.

Malachite 18th, 1051

We got out next shipment of prisoners today, 7 in all, bringing our total population to 46. 3 prisoners, 4 guards. 2 of these guards are entirely inexperienced, but we'll shape them up.

Malachite 22nd, 1051

One of our prisoners, Ustuth Kedducim, has become entirely broken, I think. She stumbles around, entirely oblivious to the reality around her. While showing the effectiveness of our prison, we need her to work. I'll give her some time to wallow before I intervene.

Galena 4th, 1051

Vabok, one of our new guards, today has wasted a good deal of our ammo stores hunting badgers. I have forbade all hunting now and reprimanded him. The farms are more than sufficient!

Galena 27th, 1051

I've ordered the construction of another bridge over the river, to the North of the prison. Merchants and migrants seem to consistently arrive from the East side of the river, and yet our prison is cut off from that side. This bridge will allow them to come to us without enemies circumventing our defenses.

Limestone 1st, 1051

Autumn has arrived. With it shall likely come more prisoners and our supply caravan. I am eager for that, for this place grows tedious. Which is better than dangerous, I suppose, but one never quite gets used to the stench of the blood rain and the misery of the prisoners is becoming somewhat infectious.

Limestone 11th, 1051

The caravan arrived today, and yet, coming from the East, they were unable to bring their wagons to our depot. Pkop met with the liason, as he is the most qualified to do so. She tells us the world is the same as ever, so I fear no enemy making a move on our position, but we were at a loss as to what to request, aside from metal I suppose. The trade agreement for our colony's production (in exchange for steel bars) has been filed in Pkop's office, where I can't be bothered to look at it.

Limestone 22nd, 1051

As negotiations with the traders continue, one of our guards (and part-time metalcrafter), Erith Edanducim, seems taken by a secreted mood. He's laid claim to one of our forges and seized some ruthenium bars. I hope something interesting comes of this.

In other news, I came across a Panda today while collecting more firewood. The beast surprised me so, and I withdrew rather than risk getting into a costly confrontation. I never though such a thing could live in these evil lands.

Limestone 26th, 1051

The panda continued harassing our guards and laborers as we work outside, so I ordered it killed. My squad rushed to put it down without grabbing their weapons, and together wrestled it to the ground and pummeled it unconscious for several hours until some bright spark thought to fetch his warhammer and put the damn thing out of its misery.

In other news, we have finished conducting our business with the traders, having acquired some iron, steel, and flux. They will likely remain here a few weeks more to rest, though. They'll need it to cross this country a second time.

Limestone 28th, 1051

Today the morning din was broken by a single, loud trumpet blast. Rushing into the working block, I found Erith at the forge, holding a trumpet. He calls it "The Beach of Dangers," and never a finer instrument have I seen! Somehow, in minute detail, he has engraved upon it the scene of our founding of this prison. This is a piece we can be proud of! Perhaps I can use it to wake the prisoners every morning, or (one day) to call the guards to battle.

Sandstone 5th, 1051

One of the guards, Zon Isonbomrek, has gone missing, having not been seen by anyone for a week; how could I not have noticed sooner? I have ordered a search for him, but I fear we may not find him alive.

Sandstone 12th, 1051

The merchants began packing. As I watch them, I notice the season is nearly half gone and yet our next shipment of prisoners has yet to arrive. It's surprising how quickly time flies, considering how we're always up to our ankles in drying blood.

Sandstone 13th, 1051

As they left, going out the West side of the river, one of the merchants and his horse fell over the waterfall, surviving but finding the body of poor Zon. I shall have to have a memorial carved for him as well...

Fortunately, the merchant managed to climb out with only minor bruises and continue on his way. I swear I think I see one of the caravan's escorts still swimming around down there, in full armor, merry as can be, but that's mad...

Sandstone 20th, 1051

Here came the next shipment, 9 in all: 6 "guards" and 3 prisoners. We now number 54 in total. Gods above, so many of these guards are still green as an elvish sprout...

Timber 1st, 1051

It rained today. Not blood, but honest to goodness real wet rain. For the first time I can remember, the ground is green outside. There are still a few scabbed-over puddles around, but it's a nice enough change. It's uplifted the prisoner's moods as well, but I'll allow that, for now.

Timber 14th, 1051

Since our ranks have swelled so and some of the prisoners seem to be finding free time, I've decided to enlarge the guard barracks. We'll dig it out, then they can smooth it. I've also ordered 20 more coffers and beds, to put the rest of the sods to work.

Moonstone 1st, 1051
Winter arrived today. The expansion of our barracks is complete. For now, at least. Should we need to expand again, I believe fortress charter dictates we do it above-ground. With any luck, the damned river will freeze soon and we can finally complete the flood barrier on the waterfall.

Moonstone 24th, 1051

Today the river above the falls froze solid, all the way to its bed. Now we can finally dam it. We'll clear the ice back a bit, then build the large floodgate. I will move it back slightly, though, to address the problem of people falling off the bridge during less frozen months. In front of the raisable dam shall be a pourous dam of fortifications, to let water pass over the edge but block falls from that side. Hopefully we need not repeat that tragedy of this year.

Opal 10th, 1051

Digging out the river took longer than anticipated, but now we have done it. We have completed the both parts of the dam, now we need only link up the controls. I have yet to decide whether it is fortunate or unfortunate that the blood rain does not turn into blood snow.

Opal 12th, 1051
I have still yet to decide, but now it is indeed snowing blood.

Opal 26th, 1051
Something showed up in the caverns today. Some of us saw it, down there to take a break from the pouring blood. It moved in the dark distance, in the lake: I can't be sure, but it looked like a gigantic, hairy gila monster. I do not believe it has anyway into our tunnels, but we must remain watchful.

Obsidian 6th, 1051
Fool! I nearly died today. All winter I have been wandering in and out of the fotress through our well, as it provides a convenient ramp out onto the frozen river. A terrible habit. The river thawed beneath me today, all of a sudden, and I was barely able to climb out of the canyon with air in my lungs. We shall have to fix that well, lest any other dwarf get the same idea!

Obsidian 7th, 1051
The fortifications had not merely allowed passage of water as I'd hoped, but rather sent it washing over the bridge! We lost one prisoner, Dishmad Akamlor who was working outside at the time, to the sudden torrent. I have ordered the waterfall dam raised for the time being as only then can our bridge be safe. I suppose now it is time to carve another tombstone, and I kick myself for not recovering the bodies of the other dwarves during the freeze.

Obsidian 13th, 1051
Dumed, a prisoner and our resident mechanic, seems posessed by an unknown force! He works furiously at a block of stone in the workshop, and we decided it best to leave him to it. I have a feeling this will be something productive.

Obsidian 22nd, 1051
It is done. He has made a marvelous mechanism out of microcline, which I'm sure we will find a use for soon enough. It's a shame he doesn't seem to remember how he made it, though. Whatever force possessed him has left him still a novice.

Obsidian 30th, 1051
In a few hours, the year shall be over, and so shall my tenure. I might be relieved, but I must remain in this place to continue guarding. Good luck to whomever should follow, once we decide in the morning.

Sadly, it seems I shall not yet retire to my bunk, for someone is knocking urgently at my door...

Well, that's the year! Sorry I wasn't more descriptive and didin't provide screenshots, but it was really pretty uneventful. Whoever's next should probably:
-Fix the dam (again)
-Retrieve the dead people at next freeze
-Start building above ground (try a raised castle so we still have room for dumps/grazing?)
-Fix the well!!!
-Train all these worthless recruits

Oh, and keep an eye on that units screen. That FB is still lurking down there, wandering in and out of unexplored areas.

Oh, and right as the year ended, a werebeast showed up, so have fun with that.

PS: OOC, I pity poor Ustuth Kedducim. Poor woman's been wandering around haggard, so traumatized she becomes oblivious to the world, several times this year. Her stress levels are astronomical, according to DfHack.

He linked the submit.  Here's the save.

Using a tileset doesn't affect the save with the exception of adding in image files to the 'graphics' folder.  So long as you empty that out before you upload so the file size isn't bloated, it should be fine.

Granite 1st, 1052
Hugo visited me this morning with a strange look in his eye. He beckoned that I follow him and after some meandering we arrived in his office, after which he said flatly "She's your problem now," pulled a flask from his pocket and downed the whole thing. He shouted "Happy New Year!" as he left.

Apparently I'm in charge now...

Granite 5th, 1052
Okay... So... The state of this place is rather... bad...
I have spent the entire week so far combing through paperwork trying to figure out who does what around here and there is a clear lack of order! This is supposed to be a prison, not some band of hooligans!

Time to overhaul the system...

Granite 7th, 1052
Ummm....
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(OOC: Found our werebeast...)
So now we need to fix that....
She's going around killing livestock...

Granite 9th, 1052
I have begun the construction of our new Fortress Greater, it shall be primarily floating above the ground on pillars to give space beneath. Access will only be through underground and can be shut firmly/guarded completely. When ready, all supplies will be moved up here as well as the guard quarters/offices. The prisoners can remain underground.

Also, elves showed up wanting to trade...

Granite 20th, 1052
Aaaannnnnd the game crashed...

OOC: I had just redone everyone's jobs so that work can be done more properly and it died...

>>>> After getting things back on track <<<<
Granite 26th, 1052
I was outside when I heard the screaming. I was carefully overseeing the floor install when I heard the cries about a Werepanther in the prison. Rushing down I found Vabok lying there... motionless... in a pool of his own blood...

Unfortunately, the next set of guards and prisoners were arriving form the mountain homes at the same time... Things could not get much worse right now.

Granite 28th, 1052
It was our own Tosid Nomalmat... A fellow guard... After two days of searching for the werebeast we heard the howling of pain. Tosid was carefully mending her own wounds when we rushed in. The feral look in her eyes, I cannot... I cannot unsee them. They are going to haunt me, I know it. We slew her on the spot. I pray she did not spread her disease on to another.

Slate 14th, 1052
Construction of the Fortress Greater moves on slowly. We hit damp rock and didn't want to risk a flood. Now we are carefully scoping out a better place to put the new underground structures.

DAMMIT! It Crashed AGAIN!
