That logic doesn't hold up because people in countries without guns don't have a significant problem dealing with home invasions. The cops are also a lot less trigger happy when they don't have the excuse of "I thought he had a gun" to back them up.

... That's because it's less likely for a home invader in another country to have a gun, if the country doesn't have guns. Inept police is another thing.

I'd like to introduce you to the concept of 'word salad.'
That conversational tactic is overused. It is also ineffective as a treatment for any of the psychological ailments you imply.

As much as people like to claim that restricting gun ownership in the USA will result in some sort of bloodbath, i.e. that Americans are especially sick and violent, apparently, there have been state by state comparisons. More restrictive gun laws lead to both fewer suicides and homicides. And no, they do not lead to an epidemic of knife attacks: there is no substitution effect. If gun laws can work across state border then they can work in the USA in general to make the place safer. "Every man for himself" arming yourself in you little home-fortresses is not going to make yourselves safer.

And I STILL have no idea what you're actually saying.

Several of the posters are moderating the expression of their personal beliefs based on the perception that their belief is commonly held (false consensus) or scorned (pluralistic ignorance). I had hoped to bring this fact to their attention.

Good on you, but sadly you're not in a majority.

Or there are a lot of B12ers with similar viewpoints?  I mean, it's, y'know, possible, considering there is a marked commonality amongst most DF players.

And I STILL don't know what you're actually TALKING about.

Except maybe OW confusing the NRA lobbying efforts for consensus.  Pretty sure that most gun owners, let alone the general public, are in favor of gun control.

I keep seeing the same arguments over and over again. It is really annoying. The gun arguments; the should homosexuals be embraced by society arguments; they're so suspiciously similar. I know some opinions can be held by many, but the near-plagiarism I have seen looks like either a massive troll or some effect of mass psychology.

I thought, if the repeating debates were caused by pluralistic ignorance or false consensus, they could be ended by informing the participants of the cause.

(BTW I support homosexual rights and gun rights)

... Or there's an obvious argument to be made. I mean really, I see a lot of people spelling arguments as arguments, just like you did. That strikes me as pretty suspicious. Why do you spell it like everyone else?

Update on the shooting: Dude was apparently a regular at Pulse. Per the Canadian Press:

Quote from: article
Ty Smith and Chris Callen recalled the eventual killer being escorted drunk from the Pulse bar on multiple occasions, including one incident where he pointed a knife at a friend.

Both professed shock at seeing his face on TV: "It's the same guy," said Callen, who performs under the name Kristina McLaughlin. "He's been going to this bar for at least three years."

...

Smith said the sometimes-visitor would show up with a buddy and let loose in a way he couldn't when he was closer to the family home in Port St. Lucie: "(He'd get) really, really drunk... He couldn't drink when he was at home — around his wife, or family. His father was really strict... He used to bitch about it."

...

The Daily Beast also reported Monday that the gunman frequently lunched at a diner where the waiter was an openly gay high-school classmate and drag queen. That classmate, Samuel King, said Mateen was friendly; voiced no issues with gays; and might even have gone to see a drag show once or twice.

In separate interviews, both Callen and Smith described one incident that unnerved them.

They said they decided to keep their distance from Mateen after he exploded in anger at a joke told by one of their friends, possibly about religion: "He ended up pulling a knife," Callen said.

"He said if he ever messed with him again, you know how it'll turn out."

And similar article from the Orlando Sentinel. What a hot fuckin' mess.

I'm going to cite this for the rest of time when people say there's no problem with homosexuals so long as they live by the tenants of homophobic faiths.

Hey Bork?  Do you mind if everybody calls you Bork, because five letters is way too long for an acronymization and...Whatever

But seriously.

It's considered good etiquette to use the edit button instead of doubleposting like you just did.  Unless you're in a game of Mafia.

Also for crying out loud what is it with people misspelling tenets (of faith) as tenants (of houses)?

But...Yeah MSH is right, that's just...Wrong.
