Speaking of other gens, I'm definitely doing Gen2. HeartGold or SoulSilver I don't know yet but I think I'll go SS if only for that nazi title.

Any word of what team should I go for? Gen2 is a bit of trash.

That's a bit tricky. For the starters, you've got: a frickin' gator, a badger that's on fire, and a jar of oregano.

For things you can catch along the way, going up to the second gym, you've got a literal punching bag(Wobbuffet), the electric sheep that androids dream of(Mareep), and the entire alphabet(Unown).

...Actually, you can actually get all of those before the first gym.

Wobbuffet is pretty much useless since it needs to take damage to deal damage, but I've never played with the sheep.

Other choices I had in mind were Crobat, Forretress and Ambipom but I'm not sure if they're overused or unobtainable til much later.

Zubat is obtained as early as Wobbuffet is, so Crobat can be acquired fairly early. Pineco and Aipom can be obtained as soon as you can get a Pokemon with Headbutt. The only early available Pokemon that gets it is Slowpoke, which is at least past the first gym.

On the plus side, you can also get Sunny back that early as well. Or perhaps the Son of Sunny?

If you do crystal, you can get teddiursa in the dark cave before the first gym.
