How to fast travel through Dark Pits/Fortresses

I've discovered a trick that will let you fast travel through Dark Pits and fortresses.

Video (play at rate 300, it goes very slow for some reason)

Approach the pit on the fast travel map from the west side. It won't work on north/south/east.
Stop at the edge of the pit, where it says "You cannot travel through the Dark Pit." It should be away from any actual pits, so not next to the # symbols.
Move east for 10 steps or so, and hit T. It should say "You must leave this site."
Backtrack west, and hit T for every step. When it allows you to travel, you should now be inside the pit on the fast travel map.

You can now travel through the pit as well as any rivers inside it.
This will only allow you to travel through that pit or fortress, if you hit one that borders it you will not be able to go through it.

Also, do not stop directly on top of a dark fortress, or you will end up... directly on top of the dark fortress. Stopping on small towers is fine.

Yeah I did this once to get my hundreds of child soldiers out, I just didnt mention it because it seemed to be.... insignificant compared to an army of children.
It works for dark forts and most probably all the unpassable terrain.
I personaly hate mountain ranges.

Don't work with mountains while zoomed out, haven't found one where I can approach from the west in the up-close travel screen like pits/towns offer.

Mountains and oceans do not work with this. I've been trying to find a Necro tower and see what happens if I stop on top of it.

They're too small, you already drop out of travel mode right beside em if you try.

Maybe this will allow me to actually see a real dark fortress! Pits are such a pain to travel through.

Okay got his to work but it was more stand next to the wall from the west, then start moving 10 spaces opposite to your starting point then slowly move yourself back.

Anyone know why the dark fortresses choke your fps so much? I went inside one, murdered the trolls, strangled the leaders, rescued all the kids and cleaned out their armory.

Then, as I was about to leave my fps dropped to 2 and I spent half an hour inching my way out of the trenches.

the inhabitants of trolls and goblins are doubled mostly due to the pop cap min for those sites are 1000 and max being 10020
changing that will shrink the load to 20 to 50.
goblins and trolls breeds like Cats it seems.

Yeah, I was poking around with the gadgets Rum showed me and noticed that there is no upper cap for troll populations effectively, since they count as animals and can go up to 1000001 pop.

There's a very bad bug still going on that make it so the population you just killed has simply respawned, nullifying all your effort to empty the location enough to get playable.

Can those " pop cap min 1000 " be edited in any ways ? as they're not in raws or worldgen text files, i assume they're not editable the regular way.

I went and disabled USE_EVIL_ANIMALS for Goblins to make their fortresses bearable to get through, some of the sites had >5000 trolls in one loaded map tile (overall >10000) and I didn't feel like going around "exterminate"-ing them all was a good thing, especially since they do respawn on every visit.
Makes me wonder what other side effects that has though. It would be really nice if this wasn't necessary, so how else can you limit the amount of animals around sites? I mean not just trolls, as human sites are also sometimes extremly crowded, same with the cat-infestation of dwarven sites it would be helpful to not just limit trolls.


Big thanks for the travel trick though! Finally a good way to get into those places without having to lag through the trenches.

yeah if you dive into dfhack and use some site editor  this here will find the site number you're on then you just need to do next is use gui/gm-editor df.global.world.world_data.sites[k] where k is what ever number you get from the script below. go into the inhabitant section of the site and edit down pop number. there also a inhabitant section in the realization building value so check there for culling

Also you can use the numbers listed in world_site_pops.txt if you go into legends and export it, though that list starts at 1 instead of 0, so the site I'm at right now is listed as [7] in the world_site_pops.txt but I have to use the [6] with gm-editor to access it.
