Update:  I have been working on the GUI!

http://www.mediafire.com/download/g75cicrcmuvcrb0/Imperium_Built.rar

No major progress on gameplay yet, I have been mostly bashing my head against Unity working out how to do things.  Tell me what you think!

Click on a star to see that planets population and net resources.  Only one planet per star at the moment.  The green and red lines are food and raw material trade, respectively.

Press space to end a turn, which causes the weird ships to move around.  They don't do anything at the moment, though.

Oh, and there is no exit button, so just alt+f4 or alt+tab and quit.

I can click on the dots and see their names/stats.  Not sure what else there is.

Well I can say that just getting a working interface going and correctly displaying information from interfaced objects is an accomplishment.

The Emperor approves of your endeavor.

I know you said it was going to be IG themed, but maybe if you start from the outset so different races can be plugged in as playable, it can be more than that.

+1.

Not to discourage you or anything (because, trust me, just by doing this, you've already become more awesome than 90% of the interneters. Please don't stop creating stuff.) but trade fleets don't seem to update the planetary stockpiles.

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Yeah, those moving ships are actually leftover from when I was trying to do trade fleets.  I ended up scrapping them, and instead did magical lines of trading.  The ships moving around don't do anything right now.  The numbers are actually net levels of resources that are produced, I don't track stockpiles at the moment.

Having planets rely on ships creates several ugly problems, like tracking stockpiles, timing, planning, and more.  It was really hard to solve, and I was bashing my head against it until I realized that it wouldn't really add too much to the game.  It's basically the traveling salesmen problem with multiple salesmen trying to co-ordinate.

I'll keep poking away at this in my spare time.  Next step:  Clean up the code, fix a few trade bugs, get the faction turns working correctly, add in a better GUI so you can actually see individual planets, then add planetary maps and planetary generation.  After that point, it would be ready for actual game features, yay!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, I do appreciate them.

I'd like to suggest that you keep the ships as something for the navies to escort/chew on (and for Freebootaz to hunt). which brings me to the question of everynoones minds: will there be pirates?

So I am planning to have ships running around doing some of the simpler trading, but for the constant trades like from mining worlds and agri worlds it will be abstracted.  And yes, eventually.  The point of this is to create a living world first, then inject the player into it.
