From what I gather, it's based on the Castle Series.

Additional speculation fluff based on stuff that has happened:

Megacorps are pretty much the only governments worth anything, a few actual countries that managed to hold on as well. The vast majority of the world is in poverty, the Earth's resources are mostly depleted. The Gateways were discovered or created for one reason or another, the specifics were never clarified. A handful of artifacts have been recovered, all of them have been vastly beneficial for one reason or another.
