I wouldn't say Chizuru and Ayane were desperately trying. In fact, Chizuru's hardly said anything about it, and Ayane's admitted there's probably nothing of the sort between them and she's just saying what she does to make sure Eirika doesn't, you know, pull a Sachi on her and die.
