Because they evidently aren't the best. Anna's a hunter in training, Motya's primarily a scientist, and BOXWOOD isn't even a combat unit. There are fully fledged hunters, the entities that Motya's research actually birthed, and proper Conservators or at least more combat-focused Muses.

Yeah, that sounds a hell of a lot more likely. I mean, there's picking people more suitable or who are acceptable and won't compromise the defense of their own worlds, but then there's grabbing people who aren't even experienced in combat.

Flurry of Blows(3): Attack 1d4+(ability) times, dealing modifierless ability damage.  Has a 2-turn cooldown.

Counter(3): If successful in an opposed (DEX+level) v. (attack modifier) check in melee, negate the attack and roll damage as a successful Basic Attack.  Otherwise, negate DEX points of damage before drawing on Parry Dodge Block.

But isn't the premise just "let's just start chucking randoms at the onslaught because all our proper defenses have fallen"? Rather than the characters actually being the best of the best?
