Quick Question

What is the significance of "Watch Dance" in green versus "Watch Dance!" in magenta, on the (g)eneral screen of (v)iewing a Dwarf?

priority
jobs in purple like that will not be stopped until completed

example being that is a dwarf has watch dance in green or yellow, if they get a job to do they will stop watching and go do the job, but if its purple they will ignore the task until the dance is over

It's all apart of the new "needs" system for dwarves.  Originally, dwarves would just go "on break" and loiter in a meeting hall every so often (I think determined by ethics, general stress, and if they are working with materials they like or not).  Now, instead of a general need to blow off some steam, dwarves have specific and personal needs that must be fulfilled to avoid a debuff.  They act very much like thirst and hunger now.  Once the counter fills up, it queues up a "Worship!" job that will cause a dwarf to stop working.  For example, a dwarf that is an ardent worshiper of some deity or another will need a temple to pray at.  If they haven't had any free time recently that let them idle in the temple, when their counter reaches maximum they will gain a debuff and usually trigger a high priority "Worship!" job that pulls them away from whatever task they were assigned too.  The same goes for other needs, but only some of them will force a dwarf to quit their current job and fulfill it now.  These are the praying/watching performance needs.  I have seem people with purple "Reading a book!" job, but those were designated scholars who do everything as a high priority task.  Other needs are related to getting into fights (draft into militia)or arguments (argument lovers are good candidates for scholars!).  There is also a "need to express creativity," where a dwarf needs to actually create an item that requires the creativity skill once in a while.

So, the dwarf with "Watch Dance!" in magenta has a stronger need for that, whereas the ones who are only displaying "Watch Dance" in green have satisfied the need somewhat?  If that is the case, it makes sense.

What I don't understand is dwarves who say they haven't worked or seen their families (99% are single), but yet haven't been able to worship.  I have temples for everyone, right off the tavern and library.  Well, that's why this game is an alpha.   :)

Are you playing the latest version? There was a bug with dwarves who need to worship multiple gods only ever being able to pray to one of them despite having temples, leading to them getting stressed. It's been fixed now (apparently).

That sounds like what is happening.  I am using 42.05, but the world I am using was generated in 42.02.  I can't regenerate it because for some reason the saved parameters don't produce the same world, and I like the site I am occupying very much.  I'll just live with it until the releases for this go-around stop, and then make a new world.

Note that all the relevant parameters have to be the same for the same world to be generated. It's been noted that changing the number of megabeasts changed the layout of the cavern, for instance. You only get the same result up to the point the pseudo random numbers are used exactly the same, and everything after the break point veers of in completely different directions.
Thus, to regenerate the same world I'd not only use the same world gen parameters, but also any other files modified (entity_defaults.txt for civ adjustments, for instance).

The stronger need version is said not to be interruptible for jobs, while the weaker one is claimed to be interrupted (tell that to my stupid mechanic who completely ignores military duties for constant green worship/meditation...).

Dorfs are stupid (much like humans) so despite being idle and having a need they can't muster the energy to haul their lazy asses over to the temple to pray at times. Similiarly, dorfs who want family and friends aren't making any particular effort to make friends or form a family.

Edit: I don't think hauling is counted as work for need purposes, by the way.
