Injured dwarves won't go to hospital
« on: July 17, 2016, 11:00:11 am »

I have a few injured dwarves: two are in the military and the other is a legendary carpenter and they will not go to the hospital. What should i do about it?

If they are unable to walk due to injuries, another dwarf will come haul them to the hospital.  You can check the jobs list for a Recover Wounded job to see who is responsible for this.

If they are able to walk, but just passed out repeatedly from pain, I don't see dwarves come to take them to the hospital.  They have to get their on their own, which means they have to heal somewhat first so that they stop passing out.  I don't know of a way to get a Recover Wounded job to generate on a dwarf who has working legs and feet, even if said dwarf is literally bleeding out from a severed arm.

I don't know if they are passing out, but they are crawling around everywhere and being slow. They don't seem to want to go to the hospital, which is my problem with it. How do i make them go to the hospital?

If a dwarf is awake and moving on their own (even if slowly) they won't go to the hospital.
Check if their injury is actually treatable. I've got dwarves with minor scars (missing ears & fingers, long straight scars on leg etc.) which are fully healed and not affecting the dwarf but they still flash as if injured.
If it is an injury that needs treating, broken bones, mangled limbs, bleeding, etc. Your only hope is that they fall asleep somewhere and then get hauled to the hospital, or failing that arrange an "accident" to knock them out.
Or worst case they have lost a limb or got severe motor nerve damage. The wound will heel but they'll never walk/hold a weapon properly again.

Perhaps you could bring the hospital to them: just designate a hospital zone on where they currently are crawling. Presto, they've been brought to hospital.

(They'll either fall asleep....Or you'll get "patient not resting" spam.)

And I believe you have to appoint a head medical dwarf for hospitals to work properly. At least they're required for the appearance of the health screen.

No, all you need is a working hospital zone. Healthcare proceeds normally without a CMD, you just don't get to see what got diagnosed and what treatments are scheduled.

I usually play without a CMD and my wounded get treated just fine, if a treatment can't be performed due to missing materials/equipment, there'll usually be a cancellation notice.

What wounds do the dwarfs have? If their legs are damaged, they may need a crutch - if there are no crutches available, they just won't ask for help and keep crawling around. Dwarfs with both legs paralysed/missing will be entirely unable to stand. Generally, dwarfs will only go to the hospital if they have treatable wounds. Stuff like missing limbs and nerve damage are untreatable, so won't trigger hospital visits.

Basic sanity check - make sure you actually have a hospital zone assigned, accessible and active.

I think the dwarves have gone to the hospital, due to the presence of stiches. I just have a problem with them constantly crawling around everywhere. I will make some crutches and appoint a chief medical dwarf and see if either helps.

Once i caught the carpenter crawling all the way down to the magma sea to put an item in a stockpile.

The dwarves in question have been diagnosed with these:
Cannot Stand, Grasp Impared, Motor Nerve, Sensory Nerve, Broken Tissue
Is here any hope for these dwarves?

Motor nerve means the affected limb(s) can never be used again, and a crutch is needed to stand/walk. I assume you need grasp to use a crutch, but a good crutch walker can move as fast as a dorf with two working legs. Broken tissue generally heals, unless its non healing tissue like cartilage (ears being the standard example). Thus, if the dorf has severed sensory and motor nerves to a leg and has an impaired grasp due to smashed tissue in the hand/arm, there's a good chance a crutch will make the dorf fully productive.

Sounds like 1 hands still works, so they'll be perfectly able to do jobs.

If both legs are non-functional, better arrange them to not crawl 100 flight of stairs and potentially die of thrist - ensure their working, sleeping and dining area are near each other and that they'll not take the jobs that take them far away (with burrows, perhaps). With bit of planning, you can ensure bed, table, chair, food, drink, output stockpile and raw materials are all within 1-2 tiles of workshop's center square.

You could also somewhat increase their movement speed if you trained their strength and agility, btw.

Looking at each dwarf with v-z-enter will tell you exactly which body parts are missing, if any.  If only one leg is missing, a crutch will help, but if both legs are missing then your dwarf will crawl everywhere and there is nothing to be done.

I had this happen to me, and I liked my dwarf too much to get rid of her, so I just disabled all hauling labors (including feed patients/prisoners and recover wounded) and gave her a job as my supplementary brewer.  It took her a while to brew each batch, but her job kept her right on the food and drink stockpile so she never had to go far to eat, and she freed up an able-bodied dwarf to do other jobs.

I have disabled all non-carpentry labors on the carpenter and discharged the military dwarves.
Carpenter:
in the thoughts/preferences screen "She is very strong, but she is really slow to heal."
lower spine, nervous tissue: Torn Apart
Sutures everywhere
no body parts missing, but the lower spine part has to be causing the inability to stand, so i doubt a crutch would help

I am probably going to make the carpenter's workshop, wood stockpile, and bedroom close together to limit how much movement is nescesary.
