Quest of the Dark Shadow Emerald (short Risus Campaign) (5/5)

QUEST OF THE CHAOS DARK SHADOW EMERALD

This is the world of Targus. Five centuries after the fall of the Last Necromancer, magic had been slowly seeping out from common sight, prompting the opportunistic to improve on technology and bringing on the Fifth Industrial Revolution But This Time With Less Dragons. Now, in modern day, an average person will live in comfort, fulfilling their dreams of filling out tedious forms, being cooped up in their office cubicle, and not fighting zombies- at least, not on Mondays. Orquques, elves, little people, and other humans-but-not-quite are still a common sight, but it had been a while since a dragon attack was seen on the news, or a crazy sorcerer in power armor had formed a nation. If you live in the 0.5th world countries, life in Targus is... mundane.

Unless you're an adventurer.

Whether a ninja viking hailing from the frozen wastes of the Termitica, a rooftop samurai from Obyeo, or a fencing instructor from Doomstadt, you are one of the last adventurers left on the planet, chasing after classified ads in hope of finding anything more interesting and profitable than rescuing kittens from a tree.

In this case, you have been commissioned by a Professor from Cowford to retrieve an artifact known as the Dark Shadow Emerald, a stone known for being a poor emerald (not being green or transparent) and being an amazing black body (draining energy from its surroundings and being exploited by the upper class).

But before the job negotiation begins and you meet your coworkers of dubious repute, first.... who are you?

This campaign runs on Risus: The Anything RPG. It is an RPG system with three pages so just download and read the thing.
http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/downloads.htm#Risus

Anything goes for your character and you can make up anything about Targus. It is a world similar to ours, except that it has dragons. This is also high fantasy and low seriousness, so please don't give me an actual realistic character. Or do, if being realistic and grimdark is their shtick. Also, career magic users who aren't stage magicians or researchers in universities don't tend to have an easy time finding a job due to the stigma against magic and its tendency to open a portal to the Oobleck Dimension.

I won't be able to download the rules until Tuesday. Would you be willing to wait that long for me to make a character?

Sounds neat. Hope the following works, not sure of the last cliche, tempted to replace it with swimming or something to do with running away.

Edit: Changed the last one, also fixed some dumb errors. (Keep spelling sewer as swear.)

It's just 3 pages long... but don't worry, this isn't first come first served.

Though I'm not expect poetry in character sheet form or something, it just means I'm choosing a party that looks interesting.

Name: Dr. Riveira

Home: the Favelas of Gamela

Description: first progress came for the wizards, and Dr. Riveira did not speak up because he was not a wizard. Neither was he a sorcerer, or a bard, or even a warlock. Not a fighter or a rogue. Oh no - Dr. Riveira was a professor of meaning! A master of names! A seeker of truth! A scholar of things nobody quite wanted to know! And now that the market for adventure has excluded all others, only he and several vastly more qualified candidates remain for the few remaining epic quests on hand. He's straight outta Gamela, as street as a PhD in semiotics can get, and he's got a list of names for you to consider!

Appearance:
Spoiler: FILE PHOTO (click to show/hide)

Primary Cliche: Truenamer (4)
Cliches: Favela Resident (3), Semiotician (2), Published Author (1)
Possessions of note: a copy of his published article in Applied Semiotics from 7 years ago, thrift store outfit, pigsticker.

Already told Cinder this, but as of this time I am unable to open the PDF file, so I won't be able to make a character at this time.

Prologue - GM Post

The Freehold of Cowford, a success story of the reintegration of magicians to the world of waning magic. The Arch-wizards had agreed, four centuries ago, that Cowford would no longer bar entry to those that do not practice the arcane arts, and that Cowford would devote its fund into growing its night-life economy.

To the normal tourists, the decision may have seemed random, as a wizard’s decision often tend to be, but the change was simply pragmatic. Today, Cowford’s nightclubs and bars replaced the adventurer guilds, and mercenaries and adventurers flock to Cowford to find work, mostly from the Cowford University, but also from other people who came here to find mercenaries.

And now we begin the story of five souls who had accepted a job from the University. Acquisition of a certain relic. The Dark Shadow Emerald, a gemstone that the Last Necromancer used to power her Battle-Throne. In the past, something like this would be enough to propel a wizard to unfathomable might. But perhaps, like all artifacts, it too, no longer retained its power.

But hey, you’ll still get paid either way. So might as well meet the Professor at the Seven Pixies Tavern.

Jimmy enters the tavern and orders a beer. He looks around for the person they're supposed to meet.

The Head, Assistant, and Deputy Assistant Gopher at Cowford University walks into a bar.

This is not a bar joke.  It's just that he has to walk into a bar.

He considers his options to delegate this task and settles upon delegating it to the Deputy Assistant Gopher, the lowest-ranking member of the Gophering Division that the Gophering Division has budgeting for.  The complaint of incomplete departmental funding such that the position of Assistant Deputy Assistant Gopher is left unfilled is raised to the Assistant Gopher, who declines to raise it to the Head Gopher as "There's no way that's going to happen."

"Well let's get this inevitable disaster started, shall we?'

Kartzchin walks into the bar. A loud clang and a muttered curse later, he enters the bar (the drinking establishment) and makes a mental note to find whoever placed the bar (the metal object and subject of painful puns) in his path. Once inside the bar (building), Kartzchin goes to the bar (counter) and asks the barman for a drink, and any information regarding the bar (metal), or barring that, if the barman knows a bar who could find the bar man who barred his path and place him behind bars.

It is worth noting that Kartzchin didn't mean bring him to justice, as the just and honorable rooftop barbarians have no concept of justice, but instead, he intends to take him into a convenient back alley and beat him with, situation allowing, a bar. His reason for including a lawyer in the proceedings is a mystery lost to all bar him.
