Previous -- NextOkay, the first time that players arrived in Rock Bottom, I did two updates in quick succession so you had all the information. Today it's kinda the same: I know I haven't received a reply from
Ragnarok (PaPaj), but I want to get something out so you know about events in-town. You can still tell me plans or whatever after this and it'll all fit in, okay? Ahem . . .
A majority of the exiles have a clear interest in finances, so the group in general heads towards the highest concentration of merchants. Overseer, though more interested in finding spiritual individuals (or those who can be convinced down such a road), nonetheless needs to do that whole "finding" part, so tags along with the rest while keeping an eye out for anything and anyone.
Dwain and Alyssa Alpine quickly discover how humans in the caves measure value in kilograms of rough opal. Other stones, such as the gray "workstone" Dwain, Dustan and John are trying to sell, are priced by their utility and in this case are twice as valuable by weight. Carcasses such as those of the ant lemmings are treated as raw materials: these creatures don't have any good meat on them, but it so happens that their skulls are usable in crafts.
Speaking of which, Dwain quickly spies things called "seeker skulls" for sale made with ant lemming skulls which can be thrown with a sling, and here you learn the next lesson: you, the outsider, are intended to serve the needs of the town. You bring them raw materials, and then you get the privilege of buying rare and special goods. The merchant expects to be sold components to make more seeker skulls before you buy. But . . . of course! You personally flattened, what, ten of the things? You hurry off to the wheelbarrows to collect your kills and check for good skulls.
John makes an exchange for some workstone, but without agreement on which items from the wheelbarrows to sell, you can only afford three splitter wands. You notice, though, that there's a fourth just sitting there in the wheelbarrow! Hmm . . .
Dustan tries to find a smith working the area who might take workstone (or its value) as payment for repairs on the workstone chain mail. "Well," says the first smith you spy, "a new suit would run you 150 opal. Halve that and halve it again; that's what I'd pay to scrap it for re-use." The smith looks at the wheelbarrow. "Tell you what; you want it repaired, I'll take these three workstone as payment, keep it simple. Take a few days, though. Can you live that long without your suit? If you can afford it, you might buy a new one instead."(Which is a good prompt to post the value of everyone's salable goods.)
Dustan (Dustan Hache)
--Glowstone: 1 3/4x 4 kg rough stone, 16 opal each
In your lockbox:
--Etherstone: 1x 2 kg rough stone, 8 opal
Frank's lockbox key grants you:
--Opal: 6 kg loose currency
John (ziizo)
--Opal: 6 kg loose currency (this is the leftover cash after buying three splitter wands)
You also have those copies of carvings, which are of unclear utility
Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt)
--Glowstone: 2x 4 kg rough stone, 16 opal each
--Workstone: 2x 6 kg rough stone, 12 opal each
In your lockbox:
--Opal: 14 kg loose currency
Overseer (FallacyofUrist)
None! (But you have a huge stockpile of food . . . )
Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir)
--Opal: 9 kg loose currency (this is the leftover after you "break" your rough stone to purchase a sling)
Dwain (Starver)
--Opal: 5 kg loose currency (likewise, but in this case you sold workstone and carcasses)
Ragnarok / Ragnarek (PaPaj)
--Blanket (surface fabric): 10 opal (surplus from killing Sir Looty, remember?)
--Surface kit: 17.5 opal
--Opal: 2x 5 kg rough stone, 5 opal each
There's an annoying half an opal in there. If you want to avoid that, you can sell other things with a half an opal from a wheelbarrow.
The first group's wheelbarrow
--Damaged tunic (surface fabric): 2x 5 opal each
--Mining helmet (iron): 3x 3.5 opal each
--Pick (iron): 2x 12.5 opal each
--Knife (iron): 6 opal
--Knife (workstone): (I refuse to list this one's price because seriously: why hasn't somebody just claimed a knife for personal use?)
--Waterskin (surface leather) full of ether cola: together, 4.5 opal
--Backpack (surface leather): 2x 2.5 opal each
--Lantern (iron): 5x 12.5 opal each
--Skillet (iron): 2.5 opal
--Surface kit: 17.5 opal
--Workstone: 3x 6 kg rough stone, 12 opal each
The second group's wheelbarrow
--Damaged chain mail (iron): 50 opal
--Damaged tunic (scaled turkey leather): 2x 2 opal each
--Skull cap (iron): 2x 3.5 opal each
--Halberd (iron): 85 opal
--Waterskin (standing jellyfish leather): 2x 1 opal each
--Backpack (scaled turkey leather): 2.5 opal
--Hematite: 2x 10 kg rough stone, 8 opal each
--Bug bat bird: very little in the way of salvageable bones left after all the meat was already eaten, value 3 opal in total
--Ant lemming: complicated mix of salvageable bones, value 8 opal in total
The third group's wheelbarrow
None!
The first "SALT" wheelbarrow
--Rock salt: 7x 12 kg rough stone, 12 opal each
The second "SALT" wheelbarrow
--Rock salt: 6x 12 kg rough stone, 12 opal each
In summary, if you sell everything you could call "loot" or just "surplus," you'd each have:
Dustan (Dustan Hache): 42 opal (I have not actually sold your workstone yet, per the above)
John (ziizo): 6 opal
Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt): 70 opal
Overseer (FallacyofUrist): 0 opal
Alyssa Alpine (Rautherdir): 9 opal (I've already given you your sling)
Dwain (Starver): 5 opal (I've already given you your sling and special ammunition)
Ragnarok /
Ragnarek (PaPaj): 37.5 opal
The first group's wheelbarrow: 179.5 opal
The second group's wheelbarrow: 177.5 opal
The third group's wheelbarrow: 0 opal
The first "
SALT" wheelbarrow: 84 opal
The second "
SALT" wheelbarrow: 72 opal
Sidenote: you'll see above that I refused to include the value of the workstone knife (gives you an extra "Succeed" when attacking, in addition to allowing you to butcher animals), because
seriously one of you should have claimed that long ago. And I didn't even bother listing the splitter wand that
John might want.
Anyway, go back to the
first posts and you will see the "known equipment" list for stuff to buy in town. You can always buy items in Rock Bottom made of iron or the three most basic leathers:
scaled turkey,
standing jellyfish, and
wall tiger. These are in the "Armor and weapons" and "Items" spoilers. Under "Special equipment," as re-stated above, if you want any workstone materials or other special stuff then you must sell them a special carcass like
bug bat bird or a special mineral like
glowstone relevant to the item. (And you can't buy any surface items.)
In addition, there are expensive higher-quality items available on this visit:
Fine war hammer (iron): 140 opal, weight 2 kg (1 in stock)
You add Succeed x2; blunt
Fine sword (workstone): 210 opal, weight 2 kg (1 in stock)
You add Succeed weakly, Succeed greatly; sharp
Fine battle axe (workstone): 510 opal, weight 3 kg (1 in stock)
You add Succeed, Succeed greatly, Fail by succeeding; sharp; two-handed
Superior roaring axe (glowstone, bindstone): 1320 opal, weight 3 kg (1 in stock)
You remove Fail, Succeed weakly;
you add Succeed greatly (which really hurts), Fail by succeeding;
sharp; two-handed
Superior seeker skull (etherstone, ant lemming skull): 21 opal, weight 1 kg for several (7 in stock)
Thrown with a sling; you add Succeed weakly, Succeed greatly;
damage is piercing instead of blunt; one use
But wait, we're not done here . . .At this point, a few things happen kinda quickly.
While John checks inventory, some passersby notice the weird images you're carrying copied on parchment. They ask what's up with that.
Dwain finds three ant lemmings with usable skulls out of the collection in Durenadal's wheelbarrow and hurries off to make a purchase.
Just as quickly, a widely-beaming man comes up to the wheelbarrows at a trot, accompanied by a few individuals. He has a smile. They have swords. "What a delight!" he exclaims to those of you still standing with the goods. "Word travels quickly in town. The Salt family is wholly grateful for your service." He leans one casual hand on the handle of a wheelbarrow--that is, one with the word SALT engraved on every surface. "I'm sure you remember our generous offer that any explorer could sell our rock salt in compensation; just so long as we get our wheelbarrows back."
Meanwhile, on the other side, Dwain is making a deal. You sell the ant lemming carcasses and immediately turn some heads. "You exterminate those things?" a nearby crafter asks. "Ah, can you and your friends help us across town? Right now? I mean, right now?"Handle it as you want. My intention was that
Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt), being away from the game, could stand guard with these wheelbarrows and make sure nothing goes wrong if you want to "head across town
right now."
And I believe you have enough info to make some purchases, too. (Possibly too much for a forum game?)
Doing local work is longer-term and we'll get to it after we handle the interruptions.
