Revision: Meta-stable Hydrogen. Room Temperature Superconductor

Placing heat sensitive materials inside of armor meant to withstand intense heat seems like an incredibly bad idea. Thankfully, we have an idea for greatly reducing the temperature sensitivity. Creating metallic hydrogen under high pressure conditions leaves us with a meta stable and room temperature superconductor. Not only would this greatly alleviate the stress on our cooling systems, but it would also lay the groundwork for all sorts of new and elegant sci-fi weapons to come.

While that revision is needed, I don't think we should do it now. WIth the situation at Oscar being what it is, i believe we should send a relief effort to stop the hive tide. And that would require to spend a revision on something to boost our ground troops, else we would still lose with numerical parity.

I too would like to stall the Hiver advance on Oscar, and the only way we’re going to just not get fucking murdered to dead trying to pull a D1 is by not only reinforcing heavily but reinforcing with a better anti-armor option to deal with those Alphas. For that reason, I once more present:
The Rumble Drone
The Rumble Drone is the more vicious cousin of the Bumble Drone. Whereas the Bumble Drone is built for repair and construction first and laser murder second, the priorities of the Rumble Drone are the precise opposite way around. There are two changes made primarily, to the Rumble Drone: The adorableness of the Bumble has tragically been sacrificed, as instead the Rumble's more angular outer shell is made of depleted uranium, is painted in a solid brown color, and is built to be sturdier. Their legs are modified to be stronger, allowing them both to maintain better leverage when wrestling down Alpha Drones, and to stride forward even more quickly than before, and their cargo bays have been removed, this combination making the Rumble Drone slimmer and even faster in exchange for basically completely getting rid of the repair capacity of the Rumble. The front two legs of the Rumble Drone are sharpened -- they're not meant to compete with its plasma cutter, instead just adding an extra bit of melee capacity and allowing the Rumble to more quickly murder lighter targets.

Essentially, the Rumble Drone is a Bumble Drone with DU armor and sturdier build that moves faster, and simply MURDERS instead of repairs.

Quote from: GREAT-ER (Exceptional Resupply)
Our GREAT infantry are pretty great. They're armoured to the nines and highly professional, but they have been equipped with little more than peace-keeping weaponry. Whilst perfectly fine for dealing with apex space predators, criminal syndicates and minor alien infestations, it leaves them woefully undergunned in all out combat. Not that we were expecting to be in a struggle for our species so soon, but the designer responsible for this oversight has been assigned to community service for the foreseeable future.

With this flatpack armoury, our front-line infantry units will be prepared for all situations, be it countless chitinous swarms, heavily armoured tanks or hostile air strikes. It consists of:
- Three-man heavy machine-coilguns (split into barrel, body and ammo when carried), for holding emplacements against hordes of attackers
- High powered, armour piercing, anti-tank coilrifles, for punching fist sized holes through pretty much anything
- Smart tracking, man portable missile launchers, (AT and HE payloads included) capable of acquiring target information from the GREAT info net and homing in on a location or target, be it ground or air, avoiding obstacles along the way
- Automatic grenade launchers, for rapidly launching HE or Incendiary grenades

Enough are provided to equip select squads with the firepower needed to support their fellows, whilst staying at cargo size 0.

I think this or the Rumble Drone are our only real options for countering Alpha drones on the ground.

Rumble has the advantage of being cooler, for sure, but the Heavy Weapons package is more versatile and doesn't take up a cargo slot when attached to a regiment.. But giant murder bees are awesome,  and that's basically a law of physics here.

I'll try to write some attachments of my own...

first the one not requiring cargo space

Warm welcome package
When faced with swarms of bugs, history taught us a lesson on how to deal with them: kill it with fire.
This is a weapon package dedicated to burning, incinirating, scorching  the enemy soldiers, the ground they walk on, the air and for good measure the water as well
It includes:
-Flamethrowers for short range use
-Mortars using incendiary rounds for long range use
-incediary bullets for soldiers, in case an extra punch is needed.

The fuel provided is ClF3 in a gelled form. Even in the absence of atmosphere, It is hypergolic with such things as cloth, wood, and test engineers, not to mention asbestos, sand, and water-with which it reacts explosively. It is kept contained in tanks treated with a layer of metal fluoride.

Now the one which requires cargo space, being a proper specialized attachment

Cleansing robot squad (aka: Terminator in the flames)

This is a squad of specialized incendiary robots, meants to operate in support of GREAT regiments.
Those robots are based on the current foot soldiers and on the DEATH marines in terms of locomotion and frame. Based on the designer's experiences near DEATH, it was decided to make those robots more automated , relying on a big command center with just an handful of humans to direct the entire squad.
Compared to standard soldiers, those are larger in order to accomodate in built weaponry, and are covered in plates of C-C composite, in order to be protected against heat.
Those robots mount a large flamethrower using a napalm-like substace and, optionally, a mixed in oxidizer for airless planets. Furtehrmore, they pack a mortar/cannon that fires projectiles containing the same substance for longer range work.
Being largely immune (in the short term) to fire due to their heat resistant coating, a favorite tactic is just walking straight through the flaming inferno they create. As our very esteemed researchers point out, this is like "that fire scene in the terminator movie", leading to the nickname of "terminators" for those robots.

I am opposed to fire infantry. They may be bugs, but they fight like regular infantry. They aren't a ravenousv swarm in that sense. Walking straight towards them will just get us shot a bunch.

I've made the Heavy Weapons Package slightly more interesting to read, and renamed it.

While we wait for the revision, I shall try to write a bomber for next turn.

Firestorm Gunship
After our difficulties in facing better equipped enemies on the ground, a brainstorming session was called, resulting in ideas such as "gotta go fast" "there is no such thing as overkill" and "just set everything on fire".
With some help from a very peculiar hoverboding community in Iris Hong, we produced a new gunship capable to achieve all those design goals.
The firestorm is disc shaped, inspired by early depiction of aliens crafts that visited Earth that was. The bottom of it is armoured and covered in a thick layer of C-C composite, providing protection from fire coming from below. In fact, "historical research" conducted by our researchers indicates that at some point such a craft was a crucial stepping stone to repelling an alien invasion.

The propulsion is based on old bootstrap drive prototypes, using a combination of bores and simple mechanical devices. In particular, it uses a rack and pinion system in which a rail is pushed into a bore to fix it in space, and a pinion then latches and pulls on the immbile rack, bringing the ship along. Then the rack is pushed entirely past the bore, the bore is collapsed before it causes damage to internals, and the process can repeat. The pinion has some mobility to follow the bore in its path in the brief period that it is active. While acceleration isn't exceptional due to the need to limit speed differential in the time the bore is open, the torque is nothing short of extraordinary and therefore allows an high top speed and weight.

The bootstrap requires a vacuum chamber, and a bullet breaching a single engine is considered an excessive risk to take, as it would bing down the entire craft. Therefore, thrust is distributed in orientable pods placed in a ring inside the craft (along the rim, but internal. Being internal is important.). Even if one pod is breached, the rest can still work.
In the center of the craft is a sphere, which is linked to the rest of the craft by a system of rails that allows full rotation. Inside the sphere, a bootstrap system allows to "fix" the sphere in its reference frame, after which the crafts can hold on to this movement core and rotate freely and quickly. For obvious reasons, manoeuvers such a sudden 90° pitch are ill advised at high spee din the lower atmosphere, but this still grants excellent manoeuvrability.

Next up, is the weapon system. The firestorm mounts 2 heavy gauss machinegun turrets, on opposite sides of the circumference. To maximize the flexibility of fire, the turrets aren't locked in position, but merely docked; a T-ECU system allows to levitate them across the craft as needed. Nuclear rockets are also available, stored inside the craft and then taken out, aimed and fired with the T-ECU as well.

Since a T-ECU is already available, a few small 1 m testudo plates are also added, although significantly thinner and mostly made of C-C compared to those present on spaceships.

Should a Joyrider come asking about it, we most definitely did not steal his hoverboard as the basis of this project.

In short: very armoured, can go fast ( although with likely suboptimal acceleration), can turn very quickly, can hover in place and always have the armoured side toward the enemy, packs a punch.
Jury is still out on fitting flamethrowers.

Decided to join Humanity, and I love the irony of making Mecha bugs to kill the real thing, plus rule of cool.

Got my own ideas for Soldier upgrades/gear, and ship fire power. Just not inventing yet.
