Sure, this seems interesting. Made my character mostly with honest rolls on physical dice.
Raina entered this world eleven years ago at the age of nine, the firstborn of her family farming near Tomrik's Hollow. She herself didn't pay much mind to not remembering anything before then; for all she knew, her three-year-old little brother was similarly mindless and would become sapient at the age of nine, though those might have been too big words for her back then. One big word she did know, however: medallion. She didn't remember where she'd got it, but the image on the little silver disc was very pretty, a rampant horse that she imagined sometimes talked to her.
Her parents, however, thought Raina was sick for having lost her memory. She lived happily for a few weeks, but suddenly one day, her parents took her to a healer in the big town. The healer inspected her for a while, then called her parents to another room. She didn't hear much of their conversation, though her mother's shout followed by a crash were hard to miss. When her parents returned, her mother was quiet but intensely staring at her, while her father calmly said there wasn't anything wrong with her after all.
Normal life resumed. Raina's father notably told her to stay away from the tool shed, calling it "too dangerous", but was quite loving generally. Her mother, however, got colder and colder as time passed, until three summers later something snapped. That day, while her father was out to visit the market, Raina made some small remark, she doesn't even remember what it was, but her mother took offense. Her mother called her "not her real daughter" and threw her out, telling her to never come back. Crying, she ran to the woods.
For a few days, she slept under the stars and subsisted on berries, until in one quiet clearing, she chanced upon an injured man in a robe lying on the ground. He introduced himself as Walter, a healer in service of a local peasant rebellion. He said that his companions had gone to seek help, but he doubted their abilities, being that they were quite dimwitted in his opinion. He did, however, see a spark of kindness in Raina's eyes, and asked her to help. She gladly did, and with his instructions she splinted the limbs almost too well, considering the improvised tools. By the time the other rebels returned, Walter was already talking of taking Raina in as an apprentice, upon hearing that she didn't have anywhere to go. Though the rebellion fell apart for the peasants not really knowing what they were doing, Walter kept teaching Raina in Tomrik's Hollow for the next two years, until the bombing happened.
Walter had raised another rebellion, this one in the town itself and with access to gunpowder, having support from a local noble. Walter had tried to indoctrinate Raina against the Empire, to some success, but he had decided a practical demonstration was necessary to show its weakness. The town hall was damaged and a dozen people injured, but Walter's plan had failed. Rather than fully turn to his side, Raina was disgusted by the lack of concern for others' lives. Was this what a healer's job is? She spat in his face and left, ignoring his pleas of "only doing this for her" and how he "loved her". What a creep.
Now, she was on the streets again, but at least a healer was never out of a job. She joined with a mercenary company, the Silver Order, who at least seemed to be more reputable in their violence than most. This was a terrible idea, though it took her far too long to really understand it. The horrors of war were quick to jade her mind, and she even had to defend herself a few times; the enemy would not respect her as a non-combatant. But what better response to that than to become a combatant? She was always large for her age and wielded a spear as well as an adult. But talented or not, it couldn't continue; she was too young for this.
She opted to instead join with the local chapter of the House of Healing. Her skills spoke for themselves and she had no trouble getting in for the years of study necessary to truly master the art. This was what she enjoyed, and she even made plenty of friends (no doubt in part due to how her figure changed as she matured). Of course, some tried to bully her over her low birth, but the masters of the House had none of that. Except one, who seemed to avoid her, and perhaps seemed a little familiar. How odd.
Today, she is nearing the end of her studies in the House. She hasn't yet been taught the magical traditions of healing, for "not being pious enough", but she doesn't even mind right now. Only today, she walks home bearing the red cloak for the first time. Though it isn't quite "the" red cloak, as it is ragged and barely covers her neck, more a scarf than a cloak. But it is a symbol: not yet a master, but not quite an apprentice anymore either. If only her mother could see her now. What would Raina say to her?
