A peculiar mixing of genera. Works for me though. Sometimes the soundtrack even syncs with what I'm doing at the moment ...

This was supposed to be a cool upgrade. All I got was more hostile zombies.

I usually listen to podcasts or audiobooks, really - depends what I'm doing. If I'm doing a lot of talking to characters and such, then I listen to old game soundtracks. If I'm looking for fights, podcasts don't split my attention too bad.

I find the Zelda OSTs to be very fitting. I generally listen to tabletop podcasts like Oneshot.

While I don't really think some of them fit in with Dwarf Fortress, these are my personal favorite soundtracks to listen to:
LISA: The Painful RPG
LISA: The Joyful
Red Haze
Monster Hunter World
Fallout 1 & 2
Kenshi

But by the end of the day it really depends on what kind of character I'm in the mood to play as. Whether it be a murderous vampire overlord, a brave traveler who aspires to become their own hero, or a stranger exploring an unfamiliar land the list never really ends with soundtracks I listed.

Good to see someone mention Lisa soundtracks - some of the tracks from those games aren't entirely fitting for a fantasy setting but others definitely still work. I'd recommend the Pointless' soundtrack as well.

"Epic music", live or some couple hours long collection, from YouTube. ;)
Keep in mind, I play vanilla DF without any addons, and its musical repertoire is kind of short.
What do you think, does "epic music" fit DF?

Someone mentioned Monster Hunter World OST. It's hecking splendid as a self contained album, it fits DF pretty well too :)

Recently been listening to the Divinity: Original Sin 2 soundtrack during my adventures and found that certain tracks really enhance the DF atmosphere (that both games have cannibal elves is merely a bonus).

Dungeon synth is such a good recommendation. Two of my favourites for adventure mode are Aokigahara and A letter for Carmilla. They get that fairy, tragic, otherworldly quality I usually experience when imagining my adventures, sitting around a campfire in the dark

I generally mix it up. Sometimes I just listen to whatever music I've been crunching on recently, but oftentimes I pick stuff that sets the mood. Personally I am fond of pokemon emerald's title theme when I am starting a quest/setting off with a new adventurer. I listen to open world game music for exploration (skyrim, witcher, etc) but whenever challenging/dangerous combat rolls around I generally switch to FPS soundtracks/metal.

Ooh, I just remembered these two beauties!

I like to use Zelda music and other rpg videogame tunes.

Whenever I'm in an inn I play either the inn music from WoW or "Around the Fire" from the Skyrim soundtrack.

The Conan OST(s) adds a lot to the low-fantasy elements of going into a lair and killing a giant monster too.

Nidilap likes Adamantine, Bituminous Coal, Garnets, Cats for their aloofness, Dwarves for their stupidity, and Swords for their Spikes and edges. When possible, he prefers to eat pizza, ramen noodles, and sushi. He absolutely detests elves and spiders. He needs MTN DEW to get through the working day.

A medium- sized creature prone to great ambition, but only when he feels like it.

Anything by Vàli is unintrusive  and soothing, while also reminding me of the original soundtrack.
Skogslandskap
Forlatt

Black Hill also does great instrumentals. Here's my absolute favourite album of theirs:
Rivers&Shores

Ensemble Galilei is great if you want something medievalesque.
Following the Moon

If you want some New Age in your medieval fantasy, David Arkenstone is your choice:
Celtic Journeys

For dwarf fortress in general, everything by Wind Rose.
