From the Depths Bay12 Faction
« on: November 18, 2019, 08:36:36 pm »

Hello all!  I’d like to see if people are interested in making a bay12 From the Depths faction. As in, a collection of vehicles with similar themes that we could all download/use/edit.  To make a lonely game a little more social.

I’ve already discussed this with some other people on the forums and I was thinking a good theme would be diesel punk.  As in, technology stopped in WW2 and instead of making more advanced tech people just over-apply the WW2 stuff.  Futuristic stuff like lasers can be accomplished with like a mad science feel.  Pollution and industry would fit the visual theme as well.

Note that the theme is just a guideline for building new vehicles now, I’m not planning on turning any designs away at this moment.

Two other things to think about are faction colors (the last four colors in the build menu, which will change based on who owns the vehicle.  I’m thinking kind of neutral, warm tones (black/grey/white,orange/red, any color that could be described as metallic.  Then if people want more vibrant colors they can add in non-faction colors and it probably won’t clash too hard with the faction ones.

Oh and every From the Depths faction has an in-universe name that can be easily summarized with two letters.  Which should probably be like BI, BA, BG (since its the bay12 faction?)

Anyway, I’m open to changing any of that.  So yeah, if you’ve got a vehicle don’t be shy, post the workshop link!

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

I revisited my P47 bomber variant in a more dieselpunk shape and dusted off the old ai into the new cards https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1916539632

according to the vehicle viewer it's made up 90% weapons systems and has the same firepower of my 55m starting ship costing half of it. of course it explodes violently the moment someone targets it, but still.

Thx, I've added that and the airship you posted in the other games forum to a list of vehicles.

Edit:  The Bay12 fleet gives the Deepwater Guard what-for:

I'm working on a resource transport but I can't get the disel-y flying locomotive vibe right https://imgur.com/a/MVqX4r2

I think you did excellently with the overall shape but if you want it to look more train-like you should focus on the design of the very front (since a defining feature of trains is the difference between the engine car and the trailers it hauls).

getting there

I was going for a more 70s' vibe, but those are just too plain. the 50s' look that you linked works better.

I got the transport out. At some point we might want to give the fleet a common color scheme, so they seem related to each other.

Noice!  For all I was talking about the front of it, you did some cool stuff with the back too.

You've also inspired me to build my own vehicle retro styled hull, although its nowhere near finished (only the front and one out of two turrets is done).  Anyway, this is/will be the Atom Smasher 12000, a warship for the age of the atom:

Sadly I'm only going to have a potato computer for thanksgiving week so it might not be done for a while.

It fires two beams every ten seconds, each doing 20-30k thump damage.  Causes a massive one-time battery drain every time it fires.  For its cost pretty bad DPS but like the particle cannon description implies, there’s no real counter.  Can’t dodge it, smoke doesn’t work, shields do nothing.

I could have set it to pierce but overpenetration becomes a huge problem.  Impact mode doesn’t overpen; I fired it at a duster and it deleted the entire thing, not even a “too damaged” warning or anything.  Effects against larger vehicles are less dramatic.

yeah I'm having that issue with this big ass railgun I'm making, gotta try the hollow point if thump damage is that good, heard it was limited to max one block killed per shoot or smth.

I'm using aphe so far with hilariously random result, from instant ai kill to shell exploding 10 meters out of the other side of the ship.

Pen depth fuse should work for APHE... probably?  I’ve never been clear on how penn depth is calculated.  You could also try an altitude fuse with its min and max altitude set slightly off the target so the shell detonates late.  Or you could do penn depth + timer fuse set late and then have a circular frag explosion... or is it possible to set the frag angle to 180 and shoot backwards?

Thump damage is odd.  On one hand it always hits with a fixed AP and the target benefits from neither armor stacking nor angling. On the other hand the damage spreads out sideways sort of like you’re peeling a potato.  Any block with an AC over half your pen will take reduced damage, so that + the way the damage spreads means you’re generally hitting the most armored parts of the ship.
Thump damage basically aims to destroy the entire enemy ship block by block rather than pierce through it into the vitals.  If you do manage to direct hit a component like an engine or CRAM guts directly, expect it to hit hard.
All this works out to a weapon that deals below average damage reliably.  Different thump sources have different AP values and unfortunately hollow point is the lowest.  I am however deeply curious how railguns interact with hollow point so you should do it anyway and tell me how it goes.

Edit: sorry for wall of text but if you want to use alt or timer fuses mount 90 degree cameras and radar on the turret itself.  You’ll need really good detections.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It... looks like someone took a tug boat or a fishing boat and stuck an artillery gun on the back.  I imagine it was a civilian boat shanghai'd into a improvised shore bombardment role.  Not sure if its in the style you are looking for, but I'd thought I'd share anyways.

It costs about 11.5k resources.  There's a 1,270mm CRAM gun on the back, its only HE and does about 4-5k explosive damage.  Its an "open" turret, with a deck for the gun's crew, inspired a bit by a warhammer 40k basilisk SPG.  I used the port gauge part as the gun's "breach", though it has autoloaders under the deck.  There's also a 40mmx2 AA gun on the bow, it has its own AI so it targets air targets.

I updated the airship so it's a little less resource hungry. still very expensive to maintain in campaign, so I'm working on a traditional battleship

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'm having a lot of difficulties building support ship that work well enough to escort the capitals in late game. they either end up too frail so become combat ineffective too fast or they're too weak and their dps barely contributes to the battle.

e: updated again now it's super easy to pilot by hand, after an incident involving a badly spawned enemy fleet, some hazardous landing maneuver and a nearby ship lobbying cram on the area whole
