THE THREE KINGDOMS, BLESSED BY THE SILVER GODDESS

Hestia, the Forest Kingdom.

Founded by Hero Asfalthe, this country has been living relatively peacefully for the last 490 years. It is the only of the Kingdoms to practice feudalism; the second century of the Kingdom's existence saw the King's power diminish and the Nobles have nested themselves neatly into the government. Now, powerful families vie for King's ear and graces; while everything seems honorable and well on the surface, the alleys are full of backstabbers, spies and criminal activity.
Currently ruled by elderly King Asfalthe V and his sons, Crown Prince Cymon, Prince Seleth and Prince Aland, all of them young adults, are performing various governmental and/or military duties. And military activity is on the rise, with the outlying villages reporting increased bandit activity and the mountainous border passes to the Martial Kingdom having to deal with vagabonds, deserters, and worse.
Unlike the other Kingdoms, worship of Silver Goddess Umi is mandatory; heresies are stamped out and atheism is deeply frowned upon. It's capital is the stone city of Grandkeep.

Nelestia, the Water Kingdom

Founded by Sorceress Nelestia, the Water Kingdom has been focal point of magical study since Queen Nelestia founded the first Anima Academy. Since then, the discovery of Northern Isles and the faraway Kodak Kingdom in the west bolstered trade and commerce, to the point where mercantile class became dominant in the politics of the country. Their diplomatic corps also are prized for establishing ties with distant islander kingdoms, as well as be the go-to people when mediations are needed between Martial and Forest Kingdoms, or their noblemen.
Nelestian Kings and Queens are mostly to ensure the continuation of the polity and its traditions; the major political power is vested in the Minister of the State. The Ministers are always by appointment of the predecessor, or in case of sudden death of such, an election voted upon by the rich and powerful of Nelestia; the Nelestian monarch can NOT vote, but they can veto the election's results.
Queen Naria, having ascended the throne at the age of 13, has been trying hard to be more than a ceremonial figurehead; but five years later, Gustav Amalf Hemerio is still the 'top dog' in the government, enjoying the title of Minister of the State for more than twelve years. Nelestia's population is highest in the region, twice that of Khernell and nearly thrice that of Hestia. While the royal capital is located in Magecrown, the biggest city and the traditional seat of Minister of State is in Rivertown.

Khernell, the Martial Kingdom

Founded by Grath the Brute, the rocky valleys and snowy mountainpeaks of Martial Kingdom are not place to live for the weak and timid. Grath's descendants soon realized that they need to become prosperous and wealthy to ensure the Martial Kingdom survives.
Since then, the mining industries as well as breeding of winged mounts (wyverns especially) have been major source of income for Khernellian government. In turn, the money is spent on helping the farmers cultivate the land and caravaneers to bring foodstuffs from the other two kingdoms.
Per ancient tradition, all regnant Kings rename themselves after their great founder, and all regnant Queens take after his wife, Tarna; born Erlath Parim, King Grath XXIV rules with iron fist and no mercy to dissidents. His only child and heiress to the throne, Crown Princess Semilia, is groomed and educated to eventually succeed him as Queen Tarna VIII, to rule from the capital city of Axehead.

OTHER POLITIES:

The Monster Kingdom of Ural

The ancient nest of evil and worshippers of Black God, Asharath, the entrance to it was sealed off by Sorceress Nelestia to ensure that the miasma of corruption does not spread to the east and north.
Once considered a green land of rivers and swamps, it is now suredly a wasteland of debris and rock, its inhabitants (if any) long dead.

Kodak, Kingdom in the West

Located on a big island in the west, Kodak people trade extensively with Nelestians, exchanging sugar, dyes and jewels for Nelestian fabrics and metal items. They have a matriarchal monarchy, led by Queen Dasha, and, unlike the people of Three Kingdoms, they do not have blonde or red-haired people amongst them. Their skin is also a bit darker, and they worship (non-maliciously) Astaran, the Sun God, and Om, the Moon God. They're considered Kodak equivalents of Asharath and Umi, respectively.

The Northern Isles

An archipelago of small, tropical islands, the Northern Isles are dominated by petty, tribal kingdoms. Nelestian merchants bring wonderous animals and exotic fruits from these lands, which prices reach exorbitant values on the continent. Little else is known about the people residing there.

THE DIVINE DRAGONS:

Umi, the Silver Goddess, the White Dragon

Blessed protector of humankind, Umi has once waged war against Asharath, the Black Dragon, to free those oppressed by him and destroy the vile monsters he had created. Since then, the Monster Kingdom of Ural lies in ruins, and the three kingdoms prosper under benevolent light of the Goddess.
Temples to Umi are made of white stone, and just like her raw hide, so are the temples devoid of gilding and silverware, except the ceremonial Cup of Bounty. Many families (especially in Kingdom of Hestia) have their own personal altars, often decorated and located within the central area of the household.
Priests of this faith dedicate themselves to charitable acts, especially as wandering healers and chemists. They usually ask for monetary gift in return for the services, to support the Temple they live at, but when touring the countryside they usually ask just for food and shelter for the night instead.

Asharath, the God of Darkness, the Black Dragon

Corruptor and enslaver of humans in the early days, Asharath is the one responsible for introducting jealousy, pestilence and war to the world. In the Battle of First Days, his cohorts were decimated, and he himself was banished from the World.
The Monster Kingdom of Ural continued to exist until five hundred years ago, when their dark magics and perverted influence caused The Second War to occur. This caused numerous casaulties before the Three Heroes - Asfalthe, Nelestia and Grath - united the humankind against the monsters, destroyed the Monster Kingdom, and sealed it off the fertile valleys by raising the ground, sealing the gap between Black and Southrange Mountains.

The Lesser Dragons

Four other dragons that lived before the time of Battle of First Days. Their colors - Blue, Red, Green and Gold - and their association with Asharath is the only information that is currently known to us.

Bio: Alicia was born to the Skye family of nobles. They are a primary suppliers of pegasus mounts in the kingdom, breeding them hearty and stout for the military. Residents of Khernell around 300 years ago, the Skyes made their mark in Hestia to rise to their current position.

Alicia was born to a branch family as the middle daughter, being groomed from a young age to serve the church. However, her martial talent and creativity led to her being given a spot in the army's scouting division instead. From the age of 15, she excelled in her training. At seventeen, she was assigned a post at the southern border between Hestia and Khernell, scouting the mountain basses with her squad.

Alicia worships the goddess, doing her best to uphold her ideas to the White Dragon and her country, and holds great pride in its peace. While there are bandits and thieves within it, the army and nobles keep the peace for the citizens. And the King and his family keep things running and the people fed. And she'll make sure to do her part in it as well.

Backstory:
Alixia's earliest memories being at an orphanage, she remembers daily prayers to the Silver Goddess Umi and the orphanage warden's readings from a small booklet containing religious verses and stories. She also remembers sneaking into the warden's room at night, searching for the booklet and, by a mixture of having memorized the readings, observing which pages were open during the readings and some reasonable guesswork, slowly but surely began teaching acquiring basic literacy over many months, always making sure to return the booklet before going to bed.
At age five, when her reading capacities were developed enough to identify unknown words based on their letter composition, she began taking other books from the warden's room, including a history book of the Kingdom of Hestia. Too absorbed in it, she didn't notice it when the warden, ever an early riser, noticed her awake reading that book. She got punished for staying up late and for taking things without permission, but got summoned into the warden's room after said punishment.
"It is a rare gift that a child learns reading by herself, but also a gift a caring parent would have loved to teach their children. You're too old to be considered adopted by a scholar, but the gift of reading you've acquired should not be wasted in the household of a worker or farmer. I've already made arrangements for you to be transferred to a monastery, where you will read, read read, and you will write, write write. Praise the Silver Goddess and her blessings will remain strong with you, Alixia."

Thus, her years working in the monastery began. A diligent servant, the seed of literacy began to bloom truly within her and she got taught writing, a skill she picked up effortlessly. At age 12, the head priest transferred her from basic household duties to the library, where she would now spent her days transcribing works so they would not be lost to excessive wear and tear. She fulfilled her duty for four more years before she requested to be able to transcribe non-religious works in her spare time. Initially hesitant, the head priest acknowledged that it would be a waste to not challenge such skills, and provided select material from noblehouses and scholars wishing to preserve their books.

The books provided a window to the outside world for her, even if just in text, and her hunger for even more books made her become just a little bit sly, as she managed to acquire a small number of books rejected by the head priest, studying them in secret. This was also her first contact with the emotion of romantic love, furiously blushing while reading a rejected book about a secluded noblewoman being abducted by a swashbuckling corsair with a chiseled chest, leading to adventure, drama and confessions on a moonlit beach.

After reaching the age of 19, grown weary of doing little else than transcribing and reading, she desired to travel the land and see the world with her own eyes. The head priest was worried about sending what would effectively be a naive girl out in the world, but both persistence and promises finally swayed him. Armed with rations, a booklet containing verses (and a certain less-holy booklet tucked deep in her back), a bedroll, a stick, a map and a small number of coins, she left the monastery, following the road while taking in sights formerly thought impossible to witness.

Of course, in the end, she was a naive priestess, and trouble wouldn't wait forever to reach her...

Backstory:
   With Argos’ father, Hades, being King Asfalthe V’s Secretary, Adviser, and long time trusted friend, it would be natural for at least one of their children to get along with one another. The one kid Argos ended up spending a lot of his time with was Aland and over the years they would forge a lasting friendship.

   Although being part of the “von Bodin'' noble house, Argos’ etiquette is anything but noble. He never really cared for the political shenanigans and backstabbery. The boy was always more focused on becoming like the fantasized heroes in the tales he was told as a child. This led to him focusing more on training his body rather than study. Thus, he has more of a reputation of being a brute among other nobles. Often they avoid the boy as to not be associated with him. This annoys his father to no end, as one day Argos will need to take over for him as much as Argos wants nothing to do with that position. Argos doesn’t seem to care too much about the label anyways, finding that just being able to help the locals with bandit problems is more than rewarding enough. Though, it's not like there weren't already rumors about his family. Like how his father has studied how to wield dark arts in order to better understand how to combat Asharath’s powers. He’s never hid this fact however, and often uses those dark in combat along with his martial prowess. Ironically, Hades is one who follows the laws of the Goddess to the “T”. (Well except those that prevent studying dark arts)

   Argos is generally a good boy. He can be a bit loud and hot-headed, though he always has good intentions at heart. His theatrics leave a lot to be desired, prioritizing looking cool in combat then whether or not it’d be effective. His devotion to the goddess is very casual, though he does do at least the minimum required to show his faith. Hey, so long as the goddess is helping people that's all he cares about. Not so much into magic either, too much reading and studying involved. This also is a disappointment to his father.

Backstory: House Nelsquik is a proud and storied Hestian noble, with holdings in the Redforest near the western borders with Nelestia. In fact, they have a rather storied history with the Water Kingdom, with at least one family legend stating that the family came from Nelestian nobles, unhappy with the growing influence of the merchantile class un the country, and fled to Hestia to pursue their own domain within which to practice their arts.
Whether that story is true or not is up for debate but what is known is that House Nelsquik has amongst the closest ties to Nelestia within Hestian nobility, regularly sending at least one scion of their House to study at Nelestia's Anima Academy to mingle with the diplomat and mages of the Water Kingdom.
Cynthia is the latest of a long line of Nelsquik mages, fresh from a new semester at the Anima Academy. A regular valedictorian with a record to match, she is perhaps a little too proud of her achievements. A proud and vain aristocrat, she regularly looks down on those with either commoner blood, especially those with lesser magical abilities, viewing them as little more than scum to be ordered about. Nevertheless, she can be remarkably kind to those that manage to win her trust. Her hobbies include hunting and sharing a spot of tea with her fellow noble lords and ladies.

Nonetheless, Cynthia is a proud Hestian noble, eager to be of service to the Hestian crown. Thus, when King Asfalthe had called for a scholar to help acclimate a royal party on a visit to Nelestia, she was quick to offer her services...in spite of the shortened vacation time she could spend in her own estates. Well, better that than listening to her parents quibble about this thing or the other...And what was that she'd heard about an emergency on their southern border? Really now, she really hopes it won't lead to much. The tea was going to get cold.

Backstory: As the middle child and only daughter of the Rodvaric family, Ivy descends from a long line of Hestian nobility. Though the Rodvarics have never been a powerful force in Hestian politics, they have many existing connections within the royal court, and Ivy's father is a more cunning man than most of his predecessors. From an early age, Ivy and her siblings were encouraged to make friendships with fellow nobles. Though they were children simply making friends, her father already had a hand in things, not least in the nobles that they were exposed to. The day that Ivy met Prince Aland and the time afterwards that saw them become friends, that was what her father was counting on.

Ivy was never an ideal child. She was contrarian, given to rebellion, inclined to cutting curiosity and questioning her elders over directions and orders, and despite being the Rodvaric child who had the most potential to harness powerful light magic, she would always skip training if given the chance. The problem was only solved one day when her father threatened to punish her by reducing her free time and access to her friends. Ivy immediately responded by marching up to the prince the next time they met and declaring her loyalty to him as his bodyguard.

Though that circumvented her father's punishment, perhaps that was something he had planned for. Being a bodyguard required training. Though Ivy thought at first she wouldn't push herself too hard, she found herself putting in a good amount of training to not let the prince down, and her natural curiosity eventually led her to enjoy practicing magic for its own sake. Before long, she became capable and reliable in combat, even if she is occasionally inclined to use an excessive amount of force and continues to lack the discipline and respect of a typical soldier.

In social situations, Ivy has highly sarcastic tendencies, enough that it is rare or even difficult for her to be genuine. She has no concern over having to succeed her father since her brothers are well-suited to the task, and therefore has little reason to change. As for the Silver Goddess Umi, belief in her is one of the things that Ivy has never yet found reason to question except for a few fleeting thoughts in her early childhood. She has no exceptional feelings of fervor but grew up considering belief in the goddess and the punishment of heretics as so ordinary and expected that she doesn't think deeply about it at all.

Someday, her father may attempt to use her friendship with the prince to their family's advantage. But if it doesn't harm the prince himself or anyone else she cares about, Ivy is content to keep living the way she is, and let things play out as they will.

Bio: Born to a petty noble and the heir to a pegasus ranch, and brought up in a caring home. Adrienne was for all intents and purposes perfectly on track for living a normal life, with a husband of her own, a nice pair of kids perhaps, and a successful family business to not set on fire.

Unfortunately fate it seems had other things in mind for Artaud, as disaster struck in her teenage years, when a raging fire consumed their stately home, and drove away all but the most loyal of their flock. Leaving a teenaged Adrienne with little to her name save for a family struggling to survive through another season, and a gnawing sense of guilt over her own perceived inadequecies.

She was the first to notice the fire after all, and she was the one who failed to put it out when she had the chance. And the more she thought about it, the more faults she found in herself, and her own behavior as she thought about what could have been. If she was just a little stronger she could have carried more water out of the well, if she was a little faster she could have kept it contained for long enough to get help, if she was a little calmer her brother would still be alive...

Backstory:
Considered by some who know him to be the most intensely private man in all of Hestia, Echan is nonetheless respected by his peers, if for no other reason than that he does very little to bother any of them. He is the second son of the Duke of Wolfglade, and by tradition would have become a member of the clergy. However, Echan favored the university life and instead became a scholar, although he has no formal university position and is rarely seen except when borrowing and returning books and other materials. Polite and mild-mannered, he makes an explicit effort to avoid discussing politics and theology.

He prefers tea to coffee and drinks far too much of both, never adding sugar to either.

Bio: Born in his family’s fortified manor overlooking the road between Rivertown and Magecrown in the country of Nelestia, Casslan Blackfield was burdened with duty out of the womb. Famous for neither wealth nor a claim to high nobility, the Blackfield household is renowned instead for a long story of producing their very own Blackguards: skilled knights and bodyguards exhaustively trained to protect and advise powerful spellcasters and figures of note. The family projects power indirectly, through the connections made by the loyal guards and confidants offered to those with ruthless ambition and potential. The title of Blackguard is an internal badge of honor but there are those that fail to obtain it; as fate would have it, Casslan was one of those.

Despite being born healthy and showing promise in his early years of training, Casslan was struck by bad health almost as if from a curse. Forced to stay indoors reading for long periods of time and suffering from health issues, it wasn't long before he gained the nickname of "Wraith" as a jab at his seclusion and pallor both. He persevered and trained to the best of his ability, but he failed to perform as he should and only disappointed himself and his instructors in a snowball that only further damaged his mental health.

He pushed his body, but it strained. He didn't perform during training, he was injured during a raid on bandits, he was beaten by his siblings during mock battles. The situation finally came to a head when a sparring session had to be interrupted by his father, Harald, after Casslan was wounded by his younger brother. By then his training was long overdue and the family considered him secondhand goods, unfit to be a Blackguard and unlikely to take an honorable position within the household. He was sent off to gain field experience as a lowly guard while the family decided his fate, be it exile or making him a mere servant.

His salvation came from his own stern father, who had enough connections abroad to not only send him over to Hestia, but also have him attached to the castle's guard, then as a bodyguard for Prince Aland. Harald Blackfield doesn't place much hope in his son; if he succeeds against all odds then there's benefits to reap, otherwise he'll die like a dog out of the man's sight. At the same time, though ruthlessly-minded his move was ultimately kind by the family's standards, as he has shielded his son from further abuses by the rest of the family and given the boy's intellect a chance to shine.

As for Casslan, he's become a very dark-humored soldier whose devotion to the Goddess is barely even there, bitter as he is at the cards fate has given him. He's been left with a grim determination to die, but only if he gets to die properly as a guardian so as to recover a measure of his lost honor. Despite the apparent callousness of his family, Casslan does not at all resent them. He has his education to thank for a sharp mind, and has reasoned his misfortune forced their hand. He was unfit. Now he continues to train, and he must try his best to die a worthy death and be buried in the state's ancestral graveyard; while not as a Blackguard, but at least as part of the family.

I went ahead and made some changes to try and get it "in shape". I actually quite like the new skill I came up with, hopefully it's acceptable to you. Aside from that, I need a mug still and may change the order in which the personal skills are acquired, perhaps to Nervous Energy (Trainee) -> Advantageous Position (Tier 1)-> Single Out (Promoted).
