New Building: Wrestling Ring?
« on: August 27, 2007, 08:08:00 pm »

See, having a ring would be good for your wrestlers in the army, and various dwarves could go wherever the ring is, take a seat, and have some fun watching the two in the ring mangling each other.

However, if someone is killed, an unhappy thought could be given to the dwarves that knew the killed dwarf in question. Even dwarves who didn't would still be given an unhappy thought from tragedy during the event. Well, moreso than the average death, anyway.

Actualy, sounds pretty good, but it could be more free form, for instance, give dwarves the ability to observe sparring, and have them seek out seats that they can observe the action from. So, you could have some chairs in the barracks, or you could lay out a full size Colosseum! More broadly, This idea sounds like it fits with the ideas for more happiness buildings. I like this idea.

Thanks for the additions to the idea, PTTG. It would seem to work better with what you suggested.

Maybe dwarves wouldn't be scared of monsters inside, so you could have your prisoners of war fight, and they would enjoy it!

This is visually possible already, and I've even seen one on the DFMA. Getting the dwarfs to gain "happiness" from watching the matches could happen if you placed statues in the arena.

I know it's already possible for personal enjoyment.
But dwarves run if they can actually see the enemy.

Hmmmm, now you talk about wrestlin ring: when 2 great wrestlers wrestle together to train, and there is a less skiller wrestler, he could learn a bit too from their fight, like some tricks and so.

Good idea.

Methods of training other than sparring are sorely lacking. Sparring should be the main source of course, but there are too many problems with it now. A good example is super strong but noob fighters killing people they try to spar when they slip up.

i use silver weapons for training. The problem though is that even with 50% the damage of iron noob recruits with godly stats still kill stuff in one hit.

We should be able to make weapons specifically for training that dwarves pick up to use automatically. They would deal very little damage if any at all.

You could always just pad the weapons like a thick leather sheath over the sword?

We should have Sponge Swords, or something.  I fairly sure there would be fewer severed limbs with those.

Both of you have viable options. If anything there should be a simple tag for weapons that marks them as "training weapon". Basically, the weapon will break before you can hit someone hard enough to leave a mark.

Of course foam swords can only replace the real thing up to a point. After that you need to use more real weapons. A similar tag would mark them as "non-lethal". Non-lethal weapons lack the killing edge or are padded to make them less dangerous, but they are balanced in such a way that they handle exactly like the real thing.

There is only so much training can teach you, eventually you would need to use real weapons and get into a real fight. Otherwise everything you know is simply theory. This would mean fighting monsters or prefferably sparring with live weapons against other dwarves. By this time your soldiers should be smart and skilled enough not to hurt each other.

There is also another possibility, training armour. Training armour is greatly reinforced and has added padding. The protection is such that it is impossible to hurt someone wearing it without a strong blow from a proper weapon. This would allow dwarves to train other dwarves with an added layer of safety. However you would not want to take training armour into real combat because it would weight a ridiculous amount.

The classic training sword (when you step up from wooden ones) is a normal one with blunted edges (or edges that haven't been sharpened). Of course, in the case of for example claymores it doesn't matter if the weapon has sharp edges or not. If anything it just makes the weapon less dangerous to the handler.

But in conjunction with extra-padded armour and, of course, rigorous discipline in the wielders, and supervision from a trainer (usually an experienced fighter) the risks are at least limited a lot.

I think this is a great idea but it should be used for every melee weapon. It could give less experience than real fight still
