Warcraft 3
« on: April 21, 2009, 07:53:06 am »

Well I'm a huge RTS fan and I'm looking for good game to sink my teeth into. The game I'm looking at ATM is Warcraft 3 and its expansion which I can get for 250 ILS (~50 USD). Is it worth it? Is the gameplay as good as I've heard? And how is the story? Also do people still play online?
So yeah, discuss please.

Frozen Throne is VERY good. Battle.net is still packed (though you have to sift through a lot of DotA games), and the singleplayer campaign is good for hours of fun.

Seriously man, why the hell would you pay 50 $?

I can get it for 9,99 € in any store, sometimes for 4,99 €, fresh package.

Try amazone or something it should be around for much much less then 50 $.

Its worth it though, costume maps ftw.

The gameplay is TERRIBLE, speaking as someone who picked it up for like $5 and installed it a week or two ago.

If you thought Starcraft was too slow-paced you might enjoy it, but if you're an AoE or EE fan, stay away, oh god, stay away.

It's more twitch and micro than strategy, as far as I can tell.

And DotA sucks.

Warcraft III is a good game. It relies mainly on the modding community though.

Also paying fifty dollars for it is a ripoff, I got mine for around twenty.

(Sowelu. I've never meet a person who thought Starcraft was too slow...)

I honestly don't see how anyone can claim with a straight face that the gameplay is terrible. If you'd said that it's not your personal preference, that I can understand, but to claim that it's objectively terrible is a provably false statement. You only have to look at its popularity to see that, quite the contrary, the gameplay is excellent. And of course it's not AoE, it's not meant to be. The two games are of such different styles that no comparison between them could possibly be valid. It's apples and oranges.

I'd say definitely get it. You should definitely try to see if you can get it from somewhere for less than $50, because it's not exactly a recent game, but even at that price I'd say it's a worthwhile purchase. The single player campaigns are great, and the multiplayer is excellent (even if you have to sift through so many dratted DotA games).

Thanks for the comments guys, I was wrong about the price its about $40. (180 ILS)
I think I will buy it. Can mods be played with the AI? (Ones that change gameplay completely)

I'm tempted to say "If the multiplayer gameplay is so popular, how come everyone is playing DotA instead", but...  >.>

It's my opinion, yeah.

custom maps, like dota, are a big part of multiplayer warcraft in my opinion.

and no, AI won't work on most maps, but i can't say it is blizzard's fault for this. AI is not the easyest thing to make, and nearly impossible if you give people a good editor to play with. they can't think of everything, can they?

but you can fake some AI by using triggers.

what i hate are heroes.

i am sending huge armyes against you, STOP USING THAT SINGLE HERO TO STOP HUNDREDS OF FIGTHERS!!!

and that might explain why i play custom maps, and mainly those where there are no heroes or they aren't superpowerful.

While I won't go as far as saying DotA sucks (since so many people like it) I will go as far as too say it is much too popular for its own good and it floods the custom map area of Battlenet to the point where I wouldn't argue against a DotA filter being introduced in the next Warcraft 3 patch (if there is ever another one)

I gotta agree with Sowelu. I never found Warcraft's gameplay to be amazing. Its draw is usually the atmosphere and story in my case, which it does well. I'm not saying it's an easy game, it's just, not really varied. Mods can make that a bit better, but is a game good if you rely on mods to cover its weaknesses?

Probably because I went in expecting a strategy game and got more of a "make units faster and more efficiently than your rivals and overwhelm them in numbers" sort of game.

That being said, if you like RTS games *like* Warcraft, then Warcraft III is probably really good for you. I wouldn't pay $50, though, that's just crazy.

dota don't flood custom maps so badly.... sure, a list without even 1 dota is quite rare, but it doesn't get too annoying.

and this is said by a person who don't like dota

Then it must have died down because it was quite the opposite when I gone there. It was quite rare that a list with 1 thing non-dota on it.

It is a great game imho, has interesting (if sometimes frustrating) campaign , and the online community has designed some awesome custom maps; Wintermaul/Wintermaul Wars, Team Line Tower Wars, Castle Fight(?), Island Troll Tribes, Vampirism, are some memorable ones.

I don't play much anymore, my internet connection dies randomly, but yeah, its a must-have for RTS games.

And the editor is simply AMAZING.
