Liquid Blood
« on: October 03, 2009, 06:31:42 pm »

Allow me to start off by apologizing if this has been covered, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

If I had my way, blood would be added to the prestigious list of liquids, alongside magma and water.  The current iteration of my idea would have 1/7 blood stored in a creature for every 1 size.  Upon death, a dwarf would have blood spill out to a couple tiles beside them, while slaying a megabeast would be just a bit more "epic", as they would erupt into a pool of blood equivalent to 4 and 2/7 full tiles of water.  It would make the "cleaning" labor somewhat useful, for people who want to upset the god of blood.  At low depth, it would either evaporate, or dry out, I hadn't decided on that myself.  This addition would give people a few extra things to do.  I've thought of a few so that you might believe me:

*Building automated flushing methods for your Mortal Kombat style execution pits.
*Collecting as much blood as you can to show off to your fellow Dwarf Fortresseers.
*Filling your moat with the blood of your enemies.  I know I wouldn't want to attack an adversary that had a moat filled with blood.
*Drowning people in blood.
*Filling a 20 level tube with kitten blood.  (you can decide the usefulness of that later)
*Creating an enormous statue of a dwarf, use an elaborate pumping construct to make blood continuously pour out of his eyes/mouth.

Seconded. I'd love to make a temple to armok with blood in stead of magma.

Searching for 'blood' in the searchbox brings up quite a few threads on this subject, including a good one from as recent as a week ago.

I created a topic about mega-projects for the next release, someone talked about a blood crying statue...

Fountains of blood sound nice ominously creepy in the abstract, but the flies and stench would get pretty overpowering fast. Nobody's going to care about the aesthetics of your blood fountains when they can't see for flies.

I thought "more fluids" were already in? Booze being at least one other one?

Not quite; this is due for versions at least after the current one.  I believe that liquid tile coverings are covered in the next major release, and eventually there are plans for flowing pools of things like booze and blood.

Just so I remember

Perhaps, considering this fact, we might just want to force ourselves to wait until the magic arc for this particular idea...
On that note, how long do you suppose it'll be until someone mods in blood golems with a scab covering to hold themselves together?

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

I almost want to put a ban on the word "Magic Arc"

Anyhow as for a Blood Fountain... Where would you get a constant flow of blood?

Though if you did you might as well. Though Blood wouldn't be useful for liquid intake.

Presumably you've tapped an artery on one of those giant tortoises from that one silly thread...

Tapping a megabeast that you've subdued would be kind of an interesting twist. Maybe one with special hematic properties or something.

How about if you let blood not flow, it turns into something a bit like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding

Or maybe it just would turn sort of like a scab.
Or possibly, and this would require alot of blood, you can boil it and get the components, such as iron and things which are in blood, depending on amount of blood.

You could use pumps to pump the blood back up to the top once it comes out of the fountain.  That or kill lots, and lots, and LOTS of kittens.
