Best Possible Tileset
« on: November 20, 2009, 11:58:09 am »

PRESENTING:

The Tileset that is by far, the most efficient use of space;
The Tileset wherein there are no two similar tiles;
As of this moment, the newest and latest Tileset, making use of the latest DF display technology;
Simply put, the Tileset that is smallest, and thus is best;
Deathpixells, The Points of Blinding!

That is correct; a tileset where instead of wastefully inefficient graphic images or alphanumeric characters, it uses simply the raw number of the tile, expressed digitally, in a 2x8 rectangle. Technically, a 1x8 area would be sufficient, but since the color of the background is essential information in DF, that sacrifice was made. Also, the first pixel in each column, the top 1 bit, is red or cyan instead of black or white, respectively.

If you do decide to use this horrible abortion of graphic design, don't blame me if you go blind and insane.

 I am blown away at the efficiency of this tileset. Never before could I play in such a way! I must do more with it!

My god, the optical data channel has never been so efficient!  Once the patterns have been written to the main memory sector of my meatware, character decoding speeds are predicted to decrease by a factor of 13.  You are truly a credit to your mind-cluster.

You should make a 4x4 square version.

When I get home I'll do this, in binary.

You could make stuff in the style of Stargate (tm) Ancients (tm). that's pretty much 3 by 4 binary.

...Or you could use Matrix-style animated symbols. That would be awesome.

Actually, the 1-pixel tileset could have each "tile" be a slightly different shade of transparent gray; starting with 50% 100% Black for tile 0 to 50% 100% White for tile 64. It would be utterly impossible to calibrate for humans, of course. But it would be, by my calculations, 16 times better than DeathPixells.

You can use more than monochrome when you're dealing with these, even without sacrificing foreground/background color. Use greyscale.

In fact, using greyscale, you could theoretically make a 1x1 tileset that conveys all possible information, since there are 256 tiles and 256 possible values for the pixel's shade.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to make a pixel fully black, because then you'd lose the foreground color, but that's okay since there are totally unused tiles.

Then again, you might want to keep the background color too, in which case 1x2 would suffice.

You wouldn't be able to actually tell the difference with your eyes very well between the tiles, but hey, that's not what this is about.
