Are underground rivers still around?
« on: April 27, 2010, 10:58:33 pm »

I know the old rivers are gone, but I also saw people mentioning cave rivers and waterfalls when 0.31 just came out. Could they have been just very elongated cave lakes, or is there something really different?
Of course, I'm wondering about this for the sake of waterwheels. In 0.28 we could dam the cave river from the source, dig out huge channels and then fill them with waterwheels. That felt good.

I highly, highly doubt that they exist. I have yet to even hear about them in 31 to tell the truth.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

I imagine you could get it IF you can get one continuous flat-bottomed cavern from map edge to map edge.

I have seen underground waterfalls, where a lake empties into another layer by way of a huge chasm thing, but I have not heard or personally seen  any underground rivers. So, unless I'm horribly wrong, waterwheels are only usable on the surface.

waterwheels only need moving water, so you dont really need a river. look at dwarven perpetual motion machines on the wiki

I haven't seen rivers yet; but I assure you, it's an awesome sight to see a massive underground sea flowing into a goblin tunnel forever. If I still had that fortress, it'd be a perfect spot to dump nobles enemies into.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Haven't seen rivers, but on occasion you will get water flowing into a chasm to a lower level. Lakes are very common though.

Underground rivers themselves no longer exist, but there are (sometimes rather vast) underground pools that can be refilled from the map edge if they reach it.

How "Safe" is underground water to drink now? I heard that it contains tons of Spores and stuff from all the mushrooms...

Im planning on making a Vast city underground and WAS planning on uses the underground lakes as a Primary water source.  Is that still healthy?

Listen to yourselves. You're all forgetting one thing. Underground rivers were always rare!!!

I literally played this game for YEARS before I spotted my first underground river. Without using the finder to locate one they're damn difficult to spot. The Finder is disabled in 0.31 right now, so It would be very easy to simply not be noticing underground rivers if they do still exist.

Unless you've exhaustively searched several hundred sites using reveal or some other utility I really don't see how you can just arbitrarily say they don't exist any more.

The reason they don't show up in site finders is because they either don't exist anymore, or are on every map tile. So it's highly unlikely that they exist anymore. And if they did exist, someone would have found them by now.

The water is perfectly safe, to drink, assuming you have put in a mechanism to screen out the cave crocodiles. If you use a well that drops the bucket several Z levels you'll be fine.

With all the caverns and such, viewing large regions is much easier. I find it hard to believe that a river is snaking through all the rock and doesn't ever breach open air.
