my list of well-considered suggestions
« on: July 13, 2010, 06:24:31 am »

-Ghosts; When a fortress dwarf is not properly burried there is a chance a dwarven ghost will spawn (unkillable). The ghost will act entirely on its own, its actions may be effected by it's personality. If it was antisocial in life it will scare dwarves more often, if frendly it will rarely scare dwarves. It may cause mischief such as deciding to move objects around. It can also scare off intruders.

-New office; Scientist. I find it really silly that any dwarf nomatter how stupid knows how to make anything. Advanced technologies like ballista should require a sciencedwarf. How good of a science dwarf it is effects what technologies are available, and partly effects how long it takes to build.

Mining Hazards:
-Natural gas deposits; found in large sealed off reserves like magma, exept when you first break into it causes a catastrophic explosion and releases suffocating gas similar to maisma. Luckily all is not over, because the explosion often causes a cave-in, re-sealing the gas deposit.
-Steam vents; causes injury or death to the dwarf who first breaks into it. Can be diverted into pipes or used to turn a fan to power things.
-Hot Lava; Being within 3 blocks distance from magma for too long causes heat stroke. Making adamantine more of a challenge to get. Dwarves drink more and automatically leave the area when they get too hot, mining is done in short shifts. If ice is present they mine normally.

Items:
-Blackpowder; (greatly needed IMO) China had explosives long before industrialization. It is created with alchemy. It is stored in a barrel. It can spontaneously explode if stored too long. It rarely produces usable stones when used to mine. Use: *the much needed catalyst *mining hard rock (when thats implemented)* mining multiple squares at once* delayed mining such as light fuse, run, place floodgate, barrel explodes, water is released and contained, dwarves are dry * destroying walls and buildings (invaders can also bring powderkegs to use against you)* [perhaps could be used in wooden/stone cannons (thers no technology for casting large metal objects), they have a chance to explode when used, damage varies depending on weight of material used for cannon ball (solid gold cannonball, shiny yet painfull) ]

-Acid; alchemy, when used on enemies it can destroy items. Use: *for traps *For melting vertical shafts in some stone* when dumped on corpse, produces bones, or destroys corpse * When placed next to exploding powderkeg causes very nasty acid fog

I'm not sure that a pseudo-noble like a scientist is the best way to handle things.  Recipes have long been planned, but just in regards to food; I'd like to see them extended to reactions.  Your culture may not know how to make togas, but once the elves trade you one, you ought to be able to figure it out-- I think you ought to be able to use a toga to develop a toga recipe.

Now, if you want to develop a technology you don't have trade access to, that might require a scientist, but I'd prefer to see that done via artifacts.  But if you'd prefer to see technological advance as evolutionary rather than revolutionary, I can understand.  Obviously, dwarfs can't currently make artifact ballista parts, but they should be able to do so.  I feel that if you want to restrict technological advancement, the way to do it is wait until a dwarf makes a technologically advanced artifact, and learn from the artifact.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

As it says at the top of the forum under "before suggesting", you should first check the devpages, and do a search for previous topics so that you aren't just making a request for something already going in the game, or simply repeat the sort of things that get suggested over and over again every week.  (At least it wasn't another sieging thread...)  When searching, remember that you search only "up the branch" - if you search in a forum, only that forum is searched, not all forums.

Now then, ghost threads here (search term was "ghost"):

A scientist dwarf being used to make ballista (which is actually more an engineering job, but whatever) is a little more difficult to search for, but it follows the same general principle of having an Arsenal Dwarf, which was just removed as its only real purpose is adding beurocracy, and it was fairly buggy at that.

Searching for "natural gas":

Black powder I'm not even searching for.  Toady has made it fairly explicit that he doesn't want guns or cannons.

Acid would just be another use of harmful materials, which are available through modding right now, although there is no way to make dwarves apply it to weapons currently, although that is assumed to be added farily soon.

Now then, seriously, you should not be making the very first thing you do when you come to the forums be to figure that you've had ideas nobody else had ever thought of before without putting any research into the topic.  It's frankly a little rude to expect everyone to want to read your suggestions when you don't stop to look at what other people have suggested, or considered the way they went about doing it.

Generally, if you're new to a site, just reading some of what has been written to get a feel for the rules is wise, and if nothing else, spending a few weeks in the DF general forums to at least get a feel for the place would be preferable.

Yea, I am an a-hole for cluttering up the forums for sure and not bothering to look through them, I thought it was like a vote, whats reasonable and asked for the most wins.

I said 'sciencedwarf' because he would take part in many different technologies. I know the game isnt set up for new users or interface but he could list the different technologies available and what is required for them so the player could know. No I wouldnt like to see technology evolutionary, thats like all the other games an its booring :P

Agreed cannons wouldnt fit, primitive wood/stone ones would be more acceptable. Your saying he doesnt plan to put in explosives just because he doesnt want cannons? Very disapointing. I guess without a way to ignite/destroy things it makes game devopment simpler though.. less fun.

If the science dwarf isnt to make technology evolutionary, then the purpose is unclear.

Cannon mechanics (explosions n such) will probably be possible once the magic arc is done.  But there are mods for gun powder already.  You may want search thunderbluss to find it.

We have a separate voting section to reduce clutter. ;)

Actually, his last offical word on the subject is that he's ambivalent about it. He has not come out and said "No Cannons. Ever."
