Warcraft III
« on: August 06, 2010, 11:38:09 pm »

Well, I didn't see a topic by the name Warcraft 3 (through Google and the on-site search) so lets have one!

I've recently gotten back into it. Never was good at ladder, so custom games are always more my thing. What kind of custom maps do you play? I used to enjoy DotA alot (but it fell out of favor with Heroes of Newerth), and recently have been playing alot of Dark Ages of Warcraft (a massive RTS), Angel Arena/Hell vs Heaven (an arena-esque game with a wide variety of secrets, heroes and items), and whatever other random games pique my interests.

Eep! He mentioned liking those arena maps! BURN THE HERETIC!

...sorry.  :P But I really do hate those maps, since there's always a few overpowered characters (agility-based, X% stun chance per hit) and I could never figure out which ones were which. Not to mention, everybody modded their own, slightly-different version of the map with their own imbalances built in. That said, maybe it's gotten better since I was last there (haven't played WC3 in almost a year, now).

Other than that, I never really liked DotA, and I've never heard of Dark Ages of Warcraft. I played the odd 'tag' map, if/when somebody hosted one that wasn't horribly un-fun for the chasers.

And there was one map... I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but it was basically a zombie-apocalypse RPG. You and a bunch of friends fought through constantly-respawning zombies to complete a few objectives, like curing/rescuing survivors and the like, throughout a massive, open city. It even used codes for persistent ranks (though levels were reset every time you loaded the map, to keep it fair. You only kept a few rank-based perks.) It was notable because, barring one special ability and one long-cooldown nuke, 'dead' zombies would stand up after a minute or so, meaning you couldn't stand still and mow down enemies. It was brutally hard, though, even on the 'easier' difficulties, and finding a team that was both competent and willing to stick around was near-impossible. Very fun to play around on, though, and the only well-designed RPG map I ever found.

A decent Angel Arena was Morphed, and a good Hell vs Heaven is VM 7.4///7.4e. Both are relatively balanced (as far as Arena maps go); of course, there's going to be certain heroes people want more than others because of some advantage they have, though.

Speaking of zombie maps, anyone played Eras Zombie invasion? Kind of a Europe vs Zombies from medieval to present day thing. It was pretty cool.

personally, I like the Lotr based maps, especially 2nd and 4th age of middle earth.

also, there is a little known map called alternative future which is also quite good, and has the advantage of not having heroes ( it is set in modern times).

personally, the less heroes involved the better it is. I prefer armies.

In this period I often play warcraft III Reign of chaos ( couldn't find frozen throne) and I can host games. maybe we could organize something a day?

Another good RTS map I've found is called Solar Conquest. It's really in depth; you start on a planet with almost nothing except a neighbor (and you decide whether to kill or ally him) and start researching technology from basic infantry to Death Star-esque things. It has a custom pathing system, which is great because you will end up doing a lot of zooming into your planet and zooming back out into space as you send spies, ships or biochemical troopers to wreak havoc on an enemy's planet. Or just go the trader route, and try to get as many trading alliances as you can. It's pretty open ended, with a bunch of different "final" tier research to go through.

I have tried many maps, but eventually gave up because most of these have no instructions on how to play. For example, I saw one night many peeople playing Risk so I jumped in and tried to figure it out. No chance, and no instructions did I find anywhere on the 'tubes.

I wish more of the maps that dont play like the vanilla game had some sort of instructions.

I don't really play WcIII anymore but I used to love Real Life for Morons (I think was the name): a hugely detailed multiplayer rpg romansbildung type thing.  Unfortunately games never ran long enough for anyone to get anywhere.

Alterac Valley was also good (a demake of a battleground in World of Warcraft); as was Troll Tribes, and I even occasionally used to play Run Kitty Run, annoying though the soundtracks were. :S

Purchased this in December last year, it took me a month or two to finish the story. I tried playing some standard games later, and found them boring compared to the awesome story mode. I tried getting into dota, but the extreme difficulty had me quit after a few games. Never played any other maps.

Frozen Throne greatly expanded the map editor, and even the map filetype itself.
If you don't have it, you're missing out on probably 90% of the good custom maps.

I'm honestly surprised they aren't selling it in retail stores, TBH. Heck, last I checked the original Starcraft was still available at most retail outlets - that may have changed with SC2 coming out, but since there's no WC4 on the horizon, I'd sort of expect they'd still be stocking it. Of course, I haven't entered a brick-and-mortar shop for a year, but still...

But yeah, there are very few (if any!) creative custom maps for RoC, simply because half the good editor features weren't released at the time. Heck, I don't think you'd have that sweet (if horribly unstable - editor mods FTW!) code-based scripting system, which is where all the really interesting triggered effects come from. Not to mention all the other editor features that were unavailable.

having never seen a frozen throne map, I don't know what you mean by creative custom maps. the ones I see are fairly good. but I suppose they are still "close" to the original game in some way.

also, these days it is hard to even find a shelf dedicated to PC games, finding an old game is nearly impossible. beside, I only saw that game in stores for a year at most when it got published. maybe walking across all the city looking for the inexistent big game store i could find it, but online shopping is much less effort.

I find that you can usually find the Battle Chest version at Wal-Mart, if nothing else. havent been there this month, so i've no idea if they stopped carrying it finally, but still.
